Facebook moves 1.5bn users out of reach of new European privacy law

Huh. For some reason I thought GDPR applied to European citizens - wherever their data lived - and wasn't applicable to non EU people even if their data was stored in the EU.

I agree: "It would be great if the US enacted higher user privacy laws than the EU."

And it was so easy. A game of pinball; the hangover of high tech. and globalism. I imagine there will always be a country that has "friendly" privacy laws.

Freedom does not entail privacy for the citizen/consumer. These days they seem opposed. Scary!

"...despite a promise from Mark Zuckerberg to apply the “spirit” of the legislation globally."

So wait, booster seat Suckerberg lied to Congress?

They are a big bad corporation to hell with peons. I hope this ends terribly for Suckerberg. He deserves it. The myspace guy was brilliant!

just to clarify, Zuckerberg can move the data wherever he wants, GDPR was invented exactly for these cases:

.. for all individuals within the European Union, btw, means also foreigners living in the EU. It addresses the export of personal data outside the EU...GDPR extends the scope of EU data protection law to all foreign companies processing data of EU residents.

But serious, who with a working brain uses FB these days?:bang: Especially after the hearing, Zuckerberg has no idea whats going on in his company, can't recall any hearing with so many "I have to clarify with my team and come back to you", even topics which are essential for his business model. But to be fair, the people on the other side had also no clue, and thats the real problem nowadays, we are governed by people living in the past without any relation to reality.

Jürgen,
you said: *the real problem nowadays, we are governed by people living in the past without any relation to reality* -- I say: on the contrary, they are completely living in *their* present and absolutely related to *their* reality, otherwise there wouldn'te be so many who are easily bribable, and without any serious interest in common welfare.

Jürgen,
..., otherwise there wouldn't be so many who are easily bribable, and without any serious interest in common welfare.

Quite an argument, lets agree we have extremes on both sides ;) anyway, we as normal citizens lose always.

Jürgen

Hmmm...I'm curious as to what data the people in this thread think FB is sharing on users. Thoughts?

If the FB user is a Congress Man in his 80s, facebook shares everything regarding his length, girth, and stamina -- according to some Late Night show, at least ;)

The loophole is do not sign up. You signed away your rights when you signed on legal or not. Still they can not get things YOU do not put out there.

Today they record every phone call without a warrant so say nothing over the phone or by email. Government has a room called a skiff where nothing gets out, sounds , radio, micro waves. Mafia used to walk around to new places where they would communicate in open places and recording machines did not know advance placement.

Security begins and ends with you. Problem being you are SOL if a credit bureau get hacked. Use cash, not credit cards. Cut the antenna off your car because that can be followed. Get a RFID envelope for your cell phone because they can track you with that whether OFF or ON. I have no idea what to do about the license plate readers the police have.

and do not put private information on a computer that is connected to the internet.
