Casual Photphile has just posted a short piece about the Biotar 58mm f/2 lens that contains a link to an interesting thread about fast 50s and where they came from. The author disputes Zeiss' claim about the Planar.

I don't know the author but I do think he makes a good argument.
As well, even though this sort of discussion does not really change my photography nor make much difference in what I actually practice, I do find these kinds of historical discussions interesting and engaging.
