i would like to try and find some logic in fed numbers
please post here what model of fed you have and what s/n is it.
if you dont want to put s/n in public please send me pm.
when you write model - dont write only fed2 for example - please write me what kind of fed is that (fed 2a, fed2b...) or iif its easier tell me what kind of winding knob it have (simple or mushroom type or maybe rapid winder), what kind of inscription, and does it have strap lugs. and there is even more simple solution - send a photo of your fed.
thanks in advance - i hope we will solve this mystery together.
happy holidays to all!!!

O.K. .......my beloved Fed 2b (without self-timer) has the number 196176, - so does this mean its made in 1961?

No, since they were made till 1958! FED serial numbers, AFAIK, don't give a clue as to the year of manufacture.Dave Wilkinson said:O.K. .......my beloved Fed 2b (without self-timer) has the number 196176, - so does this mean its made in 1961?![]()

Means they had an even more strange system! I've seen others with an "A" in them, I'm not sure it has any significance.Pitxu said:From what I see here so far, mine seems to be the only one with a letter in the s/n. I wonder what that might mean?

on all fed 2 site(its not online anymore) guy who collected fed said that he searched long time for fed with "A" letter.

My congratulations, it is something very interesting, but not be better to agree on some clear parameters for classification of the cameras?
So the results would be more reliable

i tried to do that with type of fed because it sorts them in time.i thought - if we know how long is some type produced - maybe we could sort cameras according to type (fed 2a, fed2b... ) and then we put their s/n beside and see if there is some logic.
i dont have any more ideas - anyone who has some more please tell me.
thanks

Hi,
I have a FED-2 A084xxx. It has a taller accessary shoe. The top plate is re-designed. I guess that is why they have a new set S/Ns.

According to Princelle, FED reset their serial numbers to 200,000 in 1948. Type 1f production runs from approximately 201800 through approx 400000. 1g production starts in 1953 and covers approx 400000 through 800000. There is some ambiguity, but it seems that serial numbers were again reset starting with the FED-2a in 1955.
My FEDs are:
FED-2a/preseries SN#019531 -- mostly a 2a, but has lever rewind clutch from preseries instead of simple collar.
FED-3b SN#8699553
FED-5b SN#244880
FED-5b SN#601572

I have a Fed 2 with serial number 088264. So it looks like the A numbers go up to at least A088***.
It has sync, with selftimer, mushroom knob, new speeds and name in Cyrillic only. It has the taller shoe. That is, the shoe is raised compared to my Fed 2b, The top of the shoe is about flush with the top of the case, where on the Fed 2b the top of the shoe is about 3mm from the top.
VC meter II fits exactly right on it. Does not fit a Fed 2b without modification because of the deeper set shoe.

Brachal, I'm trying to understand your statement about serial #s for FED 2A being reset... my understanding is that they start with preseries and 2A continues on from those those... what you have is a preseries-crossover model. I own an actual preseries FED 2 with square rangefinder window serial #000200.. also a preseries-crossover serial #010945, then I have two 2B models with serial 378801 and 410634, then an export 2C - 2335148 and a later flat-top 2E #8257064..
Hope that helps with your tracking.
Cheers,

70752* , 81845* - both I think 2c (mushroom knob, selftimer, sync on top cover, sunken shoe, only cyrillic engraving)
010406* - Zarya
313700* - 3a
00192* - 3b (number on bottom)
862724* - 4b
23059* - 5 (number on bottom)
I hope you find out something... because to me they seem completely random

i think they are not random. for fed 2 i think i have found solution as you see few posts above. i think that every model had its own numbering. i focused on fed2 because most people have it.
