From an R-D1 (& digital) newbie: do the R-D1's "Film" settings (Edge Enhance, Saturation, Tint, Contrast, & Noise Reduction) actually affect RAW files, or do they only have an effect on JPGs? I know the Monochrome setting, for example, only signals Epson's PhotoRAW software to do a monochrome conversion (i.e., the RAW file itself is still color & still shows up as such when processed by Photoshop's Camera RAW plug-in). Just wondering if the Film settings work more like the Monochrome or if the camera processes the files before writing to the SD card . . .

The film settings have NO effect on the RAW files. The selected settings are recorded and will show up when the RAW is shown in the converter. However, in the converter you can set any other film setting etc you like. These settings only take full effect when the RAW is really converted to your outpur file (that could be TIF or JPG or whatever).

Thanks for the quick & helpful answer. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. It's much more logical & convenient (for me, anyway) to deal w/such parameters in post-processing. It also explains why I noticed that the same RAW file can look very different when opened up in Adobe Camera RAW v. Epson PhotoRAW.

Actually, film *does* probably affect RAW, only in that the film - i.e., JPEG - settings are used by most digital cameras when presenting the histogram - so you are making decisions based on contrast choice, etc., which can (to some degree) be adjusted later in RAW conversion, but it is worth being aware of when you look at the histogram.
