greetings!
due to my recent ebay 'win' i am in need of a yellow filter, size 34 mm and a lens shade, same size - both for a serenar 100/4 lens.
i have found an original shade on the net but it costs more than the lens did and seems a foolish purchase to me.
if any of you photo gurus knows where this stuff might be bought at a 'reasonable' price please let me know.
much appreciated,
joe

Joe, I don't know about "reasonable", but Ive had some luck e-mailing or phoning some the collectible camera dealers. Quite often filters and shades don't get to their websites. I'd try KEH, Ritz collectibles, Manfred Schmidt, Brooklyn Camera, Woodmere Camera. For a very comprehensive list of dealers go to: http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/albro/html.
Good luck.
Good luck.

hey gerry,
thanks for the info. i just started that very process.
i know reasonable is a vague term but i'm hoping for something less that the price of the lens itself.
btw- that link isn't working, at least not for me.

There is a guy doing business as Todco Camera Brokers who always has a ton of fairly reasonably priced odd-sized filters and shades. I would check his site and then email for more inventory.
http://www.mindspring.com/~todcam/filters.htm
Cambridgeworld.com sells a 34mm shade for $25. Don't know much else about them other than some of their prices on cameras are way out of line.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what's the story/history on the "series" filter's and hoods? Is this an older system? I am constantly coming across them in the older camera shops and swap meets.

I would like to say that I have not heard good things about Cambridge. I have no personal experience with them, so I would urge anyone who planned to use them to check out their ratings on the 'net and deal with them as they see fit after that.

May I refer you to this thread?
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/for...hreadid=1075&highlight=canon+series+lens+hood
Canon Series Lens Hoods and Filters
Yes, 'series' filters are older, non-threaded filters that were intended to drop in to filter adapters / lens hoods that fit a variety of cameras. In the days when every manufacturer had their own lens filter size, and some didn't have standard metric threading (or any threading at all, such as a bayonet mount or a slip-on mount), the 'series' style filters were a very economical way to go. Just choose the next larger size up from your lens size, get a lens adapter, and away you go. When you get another camera or lens, just get a new adapter and keep using your filters.
Great concept and very economical, but didn't ultimately work that well because changing the filters is a 'fiddly' process - slow and prone to dropping filters or smudging them AND it is hard to 'stack' filters in a most filter holders. Didn't work at ALL for polarized filters, to the best of my knowledge.
Hope this helps!

Stay away from Cambridgeworld. Their store was closed by the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs over a year ago and they are now a website with no given address and an unlisted telephone number. Sad, because they were for many years a very interesting store.

Wow - they're closed?
I used to buy things there off and on and while they did indeed have that NYC electronic store sleaze vibe going, you were all right so long as you made sure you knew what you were doing.

My bad, Joe,
The correct address is http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/albro.html. A dot instead of a backslash. It's quite a list and an entry to a bunch of very interesting other sites.

Joe, cancel that. I can't make it work from here either. I'm going back to the drawing board.

Let's try this one: http://medfmt.8k.com/mf The list is the first one under the first subheading called something like Jeff Albro's buying guide. The most comprehensive list I've yet run across.

thanks for the extra effort gerry. that list looks intimidating it's has so many places on it.
i think i found a lens hood but the price seems to good to be true, guess i'll find out. if the hood fits then i'll have to track down a series v yellow filter.
i have to admit, being part of the working poor makes the hunt for a good deal somewhat exciting.
