So, what are you using to capture this years fireworks display on film (you are using film, right?)
What technique do YOU use? Film? Exposures and tripod, cable release? Hmmm? 😕
BTW - Happy Canada Day to our friends up north!

Only ever used digital for fireworks :-o

Sorry. 🙁

(But to answer the question: solid tripod, cable release, ISO 100, f/11 maybe f/16, bulb exposures to catch a few bursts, usually a wide lens equivalent to ~25mm on 35mm. I shoot a lot of fireworks - friends of ours, displays are their family business, and I shoot for them pretty regularly.)

I took some in Japan using Provia 400F. I think I just used the in camera meter, but I forget. It was handheld, so I think that it was 1/60th. One thing to remember is that if you use a tripod and leave the shutter open for awhile, then you will get a bunch of fireworks on the negative. As they explode, they will expose the negative...so it will look like there were many in the air simultaneously, even if they were going in sequence. I guess there are two different ways to do it -- the instantaneous style, and the long exposure....

By the way nwcanonman, cool photo. The red eyes of the washington monument and the explosions behind it make it look like an evil robot coming to take over Washington.

Oh, and by the way, Samy's Camera in Santa Barbara now has Velvia 100 if you are still looking for it.

StuartR,
When I search their web-site it only shows Velvia 100"F". No 100 non-F shown, same as B&H. Did they actually have some "in-store"?

LOL- same thing I thought. We went 3 years ago, along with over 1,000,000+ other people on the Mall. HOT and sweaty. I had staked out the spot for my tripod 2 hours in advance, then just wait for dark. Half the bodies there were security personel. I had to put my cameras, vest, tripod through x-ray just to enter the mall area from the Smithsonian. Great "once in a lifetime" event though. 🙂

That must have been quite and experience!

Anyway, I am pretty sure about the Velvia. I saw a big shipping box that said "Velvia 100" on it, sitting on top of a box that said "Velvia 100F". So I assume they now have it. BUT, they are closed until Tuesday, so it doesn't help anyone.
