Got to use the R-D1 that I recently purchased on a short NYC trip. Lenses were 35/1.2 and ultron 28/2. Love the camera!

Isn't it great, esp. with the 28 f/2? I just got one recently myself, I'm still throwing everything I can at it to see what it's strengths are. I'm found low-light manual focus dance a bit of a challenge today, granted, but everything else is a joy...
R!

The second image has an interesting layered effect.

Anyway, congrats on your recent purchase. Looks like you are gonna be having loads of fun, especially with that 2 High Speed lenses!

Cheers,

Thanks all for your generous comments! I sold my M8 after getting this one, and now I am considering selling more of my film bodies. All of these images come from the Raw engine of the camera without adjustment, and they look very similar to the tones of RDP/RHP. I sold all my high speed Leica lenses and went with the Voigtlander ones, which did not disappoint me in any way!

I think nobody dares to do what you did; selling your Leica gear.
But you did well, the RD1 is superb and well off in your hands.
Very cool shots you did.

Wow! Most would consider this as an option when they can't afford the M8! Besides the raw engine, any other practical/user considerations/differences between the 2 that you can share with us?

Cheers,

Compared with M8, briefly:

Pros: Cheap (half price of M8 in used market)
More like an analog RF, flippable LCD, easier operation
Lighter shutter sound (to my ears)
Better color redention and better high ISO performance, M8 images are more digital looking, closer to my 5D. R-D1 tone is close to RDP/RHP.

Cons: Less image quality, but not critical at all,
Shorter battery life
Less focusing accuracy, which the M8 is much better
1.53x v.s. 1.3x, and stronger vignetting
Slower card record speed and 2GB limit, not an issue for film RF users

Overall, I prefer the R-D1 over the M8, not to mention the 50% price tag, so
I sold the M8 and kept this one. I also sold quite a lot of Leica lenses, as the VC ones are equally good. Really, it is more about how you capture an image.

Hope this helps.

Dave
