I'm curiious where rangefinders came from. I'm assuming the technology came from the navy, which used rangefinders for artillery at the start of WW1. From the reading I've done the first rangefinder camera was the Kodak 3A Autographic of 1916. They seemed to disappear for nearly 15 years after that. Next, they seem to appear on the Leica and then the Contax. I also found Kodak was making handheld RF that didn't attach to cameras in the early 1930s. What's the history on rangefinders and cameras in the first few decades?
