Hi,

Just bought three Yashica Electros off of e-bay. Does anyone know what model/type of flash is compatible with the Yashica Electro 35? TL and GSN?

Thanks

Hi Sophia,
The GSN has a shot-shoe so any normal flash should work. I'm not sure if the TL does or not; it may need a flash with a PC cord.

With my GSN, I just have a cheap old Promaster flash. It has 2 auto settings. I just set the desired f-stop on the flash (usually f8) and set the GSN aperture for the same setting, and change the shutter from "auto" to "flash."

2 samples I took recently with that set-up:

Good luck.

I use an old Vivitar 2500 with good success on my GSN. I do what the previous poster said, set the shutter to flash and the aperture to what is required by the auto mode of the flash unit.

Thanks for the info.

I'm still repairing the Yashica's. They are in bad shape...

I ordered Jon Goodman's light seal kit and the Yashica Guy's battery adapters. In a month or so I'll be back to film...

Let me know what you think?

Just for the case you want a Yashica flash, not dedicated nor specially designed for the Electros, but just like any other yet bearing the name "Yashica" on it, there are now on eBay two compatible ones:

I DON'T KNOW THEM, so you should askl the seller if they are 'AUTO' or not. Secondly, they are for their category quite pricy, so I wouldn't add to the starting bid more than 2 dolares.

Cheers,
Ruben

I went through this myself recently. Basically all auto flashes will work. Older flashes sometimes come with an integrated PC cord for use with the non-hotshoe Electro 35s. Look for a flash with a narrow base to clear the film rewind knob right next to the hotshoe. For example, my Vivitar 5200 cannot be put on a GSN but a Sunpak 411 can.

I was greedy and picked flashes with 4 auto modes. These usually require 4 batteries which means big and heavy. The Sunpak 411 is an absolute monster, I don't recommend it... The Vivitar 5200 is not too bad and I use it with my GX.

Another point to note is the ISO range of the auto mode. Some auto flashes only goes down to ISO 400. If you want to use the flash for fill that is a limitation (you're supposed to go 1 or 2 stops below ambient I think, but I am inexperienced in that).

The nice thing about the GSN is that the flash mode automatically set shutter speed to 1/30. I find that useful when it's really too dark and I just want flash to fire. I cannot figure out how to do that with my GX.

Response to an older thread... On the GX, if you mount a flash with a high trigger voltage, the shutter is constrained to be no longer than 1/30th. Use this for the case you suggested, "too dark and I just want flash."

On the GX, if you mount a flash with a low trigger voltage, the shutter not constrained. It will run a longer or shorter exposure to match the ambient light. Thus, the GX can be used for fill-flash with a low-trigger-voltage flash.

What's the threshold? In my tests, 4v is "low" and 200v is "high" but I don't know where is the threshold.
