Hi has anyone out there ever used or is using a flash with an xpan? I love 400 and 800 b&w film though with the fastest lens being f4 it gets rather tight obviously for low light shots.

No - I never "flashed" with a xpan. For solving the problem you describe I take a light monopod.
But I read about. If you want to use a flash on a panoramic camera it is a advantage to use 2 similar flashes (one Master, one slave) on each side of the camera. For practical use it would be good to build some bar where you can screw the flashes and camera on.
The power of the two flashes is calculated as below:
LZtotal = ( (LZflash1)´`2 + (LZ flash2)´`2)´` 1/2

eg LZ flash 1 , 2 = 32
LZ total = ( 1024+1024)´`1/2 = 45
(LZ = Leitzahl , guidenumber)
With guidnumber 45 you can light till 11m.
But I never tried it.
