Hi,
anyone know of a source of suitable foam material for use as light seals in the UK? Have now got a few to work on.

Hi Dave
I used some of that foam mat stuff that you get for kids from a craft shop - bookwise or pound shop or art store comes in various colours and black - just cut the strips thin and push-fit them in the groove if there is a groove if you need the sticky backed stuff I cant help. I also use recycled film cassetes for the velvet and stick it with double sided tape.

I got some from "pilgrim18" on eBay, a selection for £3.50 + 50p p&p. He advertises it regularly.fidget said:Hi,

Don't know if you've done this job before but after a couple of attempts at cutting and fitting the VERY narrow bits in the channels where the back closes, on an SLR, I gave up with the adhesive-backed! I just cut some non-adhesive strips slightly wider and pushed it home, it stays there all by itself. It's near-impossible to guide the adhesive-backed stuff into the narrow channel without it sticking to the sides :-( With hindsight I maybe should have laid it in the channel with the backing still on and peeled it off in-situ, but I never tried that idea. Anyone have any tips on how it should be done?

The best solution is the material Jon Goodman sells. The problem with many foams is that they outgas and this can cause other problems. The seal strips that Jon includes are precut without adhesive. I have used many of these without a problem and both the pro repairers I use, utlise Jon Goodmans materials. At around $10 for a full kit enough for up to 10 cameras and delivery in a week, you would be silly to go elsewher. If you just need a small amount of material, I have plenty and could get it to you in a couple of days.

If you want a quick fix there is some under your right hand
Yes my mouse mat had an accident with the craft knife.

Thanks guys. I have turned the house upside down looking for some dense foam to cut up for this job. I know I had some but, when you need it, can't find it!
Hey Noel, you've save the day! How can I have missed that mouse mat. I guess that I can re-arrange its dimensions a little. I think I'll also search for Jon Goodman, see if large thin sheets are available.
Thanks all, Dave...

Jon is a member here I think so you should be able to find his info.
I think he is "interslice" on ebay. He's got all the foam you could need.
