I am using a Epson 4490. Yes my girl friend let me use it at last.
I have some film in slide mounts and some on a strip.
I am not sure that the film is in focus. Is there a method that I need to use to get the film to the correct height?
IE should I use a particular slide mount, or non at all?

There should be different holders for mounted slides and strips.
You can't focus on the film with the Epson 4490 as it's fixed focus. You can try to adjust the height of holder by putting shims of paper under the edges but that will only help if the scanner focuses past the film plane. Also, don't expect too much from the Epson 4490 in terms of sharpness or overall quality. Consumer flatbeds don't do well with 35mm film and even in that field the the Epson 4490 is not top of the line. Since you're scanning slides you might have trouble getting enough light through them if they're a little underexposed.
Anyways, I don't want to curb your enthusiasm too much here, just telling you what you can/should expect.
