Given that most people on this site are more interested in street, landscape and portaiture, I don't notice a lot of discussion about still life photography or product photography. Or maybe I'm just not looking in the right sub forums.
Several months ago there was a kick starter campaign for a portable self contained light tent called the Foldio. I backed the campaign and recieved my unit last week.
I wrote a short review of it here for anyone interested.
The design is elegant and makes a nice template for a DIY build, but I'm not sure you'd save a lot of money ($20, maybe $30), and you'd lose some durability.
The TL;DR is: it is inexpensive ($50 including international shipping), works well, takes no time to setup and tear down, takes up next to no storage space, doesn't require external lights, and really shows me just how dirty my cameras are...
