We're house cleaning, and my mom just found a Canon AF35 ML among our stuff. Does anybody know anything about it, perhaps a manual? It's already automated and got fancy switches and stuff that I don't know what to do with...

Kat, it is pretty automated. All you need to do is make sure the batteries are good, load some film, point and shoot. The only fancy switch besides the shutter release button would be one to activate the built in flash. I've read that the lens is a very good performer but the AF is a bit loud.

Thanks a bunch, Frank! I put two batteries in and though it came to life, it didn't technically work at first. However, I tried again today, and viola! The shutter finally clicked, it did its infamous noisy advance, and the leds/symbols came on in the VF. Even the flash worked. Yipee! Can't wait to test it with film.

Finally at home...
Hi!
This cam is a little gem! It's one the best point-and-shoots Canon ever made, early-80s-style, with a great lens! Hope it works. Enjoy!

The 35ML is pretty cool. The flash on mine doesn't work (it sounds like it has a shorting capacitor) but I never use flash and it allows you to ignore the low-light warning. It also helps that mine is the later model that goes up to ISO1000.
Between the warning tones and the autowind (louder than any of my SLRs) it's definitely not a stealth camera. If I ever bother to open it up I want to figure out how to muffle that darn beeper.

I don't have one but I have been trying to get one for a long time. They don't seem to be very common. I think the AF 35ML is the only P&S film camera with a faster than f/2.8 (or 2.7) lens ever made by a major camera company. I am not sure about Leica and Contax offerings though, since they always were and still are too expensive for me.bcostin said:The 35ML is pretty cool. I do have the AF 35M, which has an f/2.8 Tessar type 4 element lens, active IR autofocus and no continuous shooting. The film advance motor is really loud in that one too. I also have the AF35M II, which is basically a lighter and somewhat less noisy version.
Interestingly the Canon Camera Museum has incorrect data on the AF 35MII. It says that pre-focus is achieved by pressing the shutter button halfway, but in fact the self-timer is used. You have to "cock" the self timer and press the shutter release all the way, which activates the auto focus, locks the focus and starts the self-timer. If you press the shutter release again before the self-timer has run out, it will release the shutter immediatelly. Kind of difficult, but at least you will never release the shutter accidentally before composing the picture, which is quite possible with the shutter button halfway AF lock system. The AF 35M works the same way, but the AF 35ML does not seem to have a similar self-timer lever?

Leica Minilux has an incredible 2.4/40 lens. And it's quite affordable.
Konica Hexar also has a magical 2/35 lens.
Contax never went faster than f/2.8.

Rollei AFM35 (Fuji Klasse) = F2.6
Leica Minilux = F2.4
Leica CM = F2.4
Konica Hexar AF = F2.0
Fuji Natura = F1.9

I forgot about the Konica Hexar. Wasn't it as new much less expensive than the Leica Minilux? I would imagine that even a used one should still be cheaper, since the Konica brand does not have the magical aura of Leica.adonf said:Leica Minilux has an incredible 2.4/40 lens. Well, the Canon AF 35ML has a f/1.9 lens so it still wins
The lens is probably not quite as good as the Minilux or Hexar though.
I could've got one for 40 euros, but I got cheap and decided to wait for a better offer. After all, the AF 35M and AF 35MII were both less than 10 euros...

Nah, the Rollei is still too close to 2.8 to really countcelerystalksme said:Rollei AFM35 (Fuji Klasse) = F2.6

I have to admit that I had never even heard about the Fuji Natura. Some googling revealed that it has never been officially exported outside Japan, which explains my lack of knowledge. Still, it seems like a dream camera for vacations.
There also seems to be a zoom version called Natura Classica with a 28-56 mm F/2.8-5.4 lens. Pretty impressive as well for such a tiny 35 mm camera, but not available outside Japan either.

The Fuji Natura S had a 24mm 1.9 Super EBC lens
Its a very hard to find camera right now
absolutely superb, I let go of mine last year because I had to finance a lens for wedding work
since then I have added a Yashica T4 to my arsenal, a 3.5 lens but the flash IQ is better than anything I have ever used... the images are impressive
Here is an image last year I took with the Fuji (its a crappy scan, but the film was Superia 800)

Let's dig out old thread - Ken R. has reviewed 35ML
He also mentions AF issue like some others, too (though not all of users).
I personally have resisted this camera by placing too low bids, now I'm on safe side - remember what happened to 35RC

Ok, looks like I'm about 3 years late with this. I finally got one of these little gems 2 days ago and ran a roll of film through it. It is a much better camera than what the going price for them might indicate. The lens is wonderful and I didn't have any issues with focusing. Don't try to focus too close and be mindful of the focus box. I did the focus and then recompose with it, it seemed to work. It also will continue shooting if you continue to press the shutter button, at maybe 1 frame a second, it isn't an SLR with a motor drive, but fun any way. Be mindful I've just run one roll through it so far, but it seems like a very nice camera. Here is the set I have started on flickr from it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/21981741@N02/sets/72157624539717782/with/5383010392/ I didn't notice any ones head turning when I clicked the shutter, so it may not actually be all that loud. I don't think I would use it at a church wedding though.

I also have three of the Canon MLs. One is the latest model which takes ASA 1000 film. I've had it in London with me and came back with some great pictures taken atop the London Eye. They're posted on RFF about a year back. The one thing I don't like is that it makes a sound when flash is needed and my hearing isn't the greatest - I would have preferred a flashing diod in the eyepiece. Also, you need to check the focusing symbols when locking in on a subject, because often the symbols showing are incorrect. Not sure how much difference that makes, but I would think it would be more critical with a F1.9 aperature than a 2.8 or 3.5. On a bright day, you can set the zone focus symbols on any symbol you want in my XA2 and they'll come out just fine, but that has a 3.5 lens not a 1.9. Other than that, the Canon ML is capable of some good images.

Nice lens, shame about the noise. Seriously though, about the loudest motorised wind on I've ever heard. As good as the lens is, the noise just grated and had to let mine go. If it was as quiet as the Olympus Stylus it would be a camera from heaven!

Yes, I would definitely agree that they are noisy. I have gotten so I rather enjoy it. The little Olympus is certainly quieter. Actually, I think you two fellows have stated about every bad trait the camera has. Very observant of you. I sort of take my time when I shoot it to make sure where the focus is before I push the shutter and haven't had much problem with out of focus photos, at least no worse than my norm.
Almost all of my point and shoots are quieter, but none of the others have a 1.9 lens on them and for around $20 they are pretty hard to beat for that type of camera. Oh I have some AF35M II Sure Shots that will give it a contest noise wise. Somewhat easier to shoot, but a 2.8 lens. Good lens though. Lots of fun for the money.

I've used the AF 35ML and it does have a great lens, when the focus actually works. It tends to be a bit soft wide open. Otherwise the lens is great.

Here are some shots with mine if you are interested, most of these are shot on expired film.

(I'm up to five of them, a couple are getting pretty beat up, but they are still working)

I found a way to cut off the low light beep: See my blog
If you think the sound is weird, try a Canon MC or a T70 ;-)
