4 aspherical elements... could mean nothing though, lets see.
Personally I'd sacrifice the IS, fast AF, and even maybe some zoom range for a little less bulk and a distance scale.

Hope it can have mechanical focus and aperture ring - but seems it doesn't. Still a good lens though.

Why would they design zoom lens with mech. focus, aperture ring and rest of things people today use too rarely to implement them?

fuji's pricing has typically been very reasonable when you consider what they offer and comparing it against similar lenses from other makers

true that. Why would they design zoom lens with mech. focus, aperture ring and rest of things people today use too rarely to implement them?
they have done it though for other lenses, weird that sometimes they chose to skip it.

The reason most people buy the x cameras is because they have mechanical controls.

Any word if this lens is fully optically corrected or using after the fact digital corrections?
Like said already price is higher than I would have hoped. Probably a foolish idea to hope for a lens like this around 7-800 dollars anymore though as new optics coming out of Japan are getting more and more expensive. The added OIS does cushion the blow though.
I will start saving for one, and keep an eye on that Samyang 10mm f2.8. Pity we have to wait yet again for this lens though. Wish Fuji would do what George R R Martin needs to do and just get on with it.

Fuji lenses are very reasonably priced, especially they almost offer rebate all the time along with purchase of any body. Last time I enrolled $299 18/2, $399 35/1.4

From the picture it seems to have those. I see an aperture priority switch, so my guess would be similar to how the 18-55 works:
Aperture ring - closest to lens mount
Zoom ring - middle
Manual focus ring - closest to front of lens

Yes... same as the 18-55: f-stop ring is 'by wire', not mechanical. Not like the 35 which has the traditional mechanical f-stop ring.

your almost comprehensive list is missing the Canon 10-22 and 11-22 (not sold in the US) but exactly the point, based upon what is out there, it's not outrageous.

Especially considering it is the only lens with inbuilt IS.

It's a bit more then I was hoping it would be for a super wide zoom for the X platform.
But that also means that I can pick up my X-E2 and the kit lens for it or a wide of some kind while the rebate is on and have that plus my adapters+m lenses to enjoy and save my pennies for this super wide zoom.
That 15-36mm zoom equiv will be perfect for most of my shots as I shoot a 35mm and 15mm now on the RF mostly. Maybe there will be a promo going when it releases and it will be discounted by a wee bit. If not I'll just save for it.
Still glad to see it's not $2000 or something

Distortion is always present in a zoom. It would be strange not to use digital correction.

I have heard ... That the main reason Zeiss lenses for the Fuji and Nex mount are so much bigger than their OEM counterparts is that they try not to design lenses that depend on fw/sw corrections. Whether that is true or not, who knows. But it seems since the first m43 lenses came out w/ their well know use of digital path correction, it now seems to be an acceptable path to help minimize cost.

The Zeiss 32mm does rely on digital correction, while the Fuji 35mm f1.4 doesn't, but it suffers from some field curvature. According to reidreviews (it's a pay site), the Fuji is actually better, except at f1.8.

Incidentally, Reid just reviewed the Zeiss 12mm and Fuji 14mm and, yes, the Zeiss depends on digital correction.
