Fuji Discontinues Velvia 100 in U.S.

As if there were so many people shooting Velvia 100 that it mattered.
If you ask to be shown the test data that the levels of phenol in Velvia 100 could ever have been a danger to anyone, the way it is used, you will be waiting a long time. Because there isn't any.
The EPA has a history of not bothering with that kind of research, it only finds an element which is dangerous in certain amounts, then outlaws it in any amount, without any evidence at all. I'm sure someone won't believe that, but I'd suggest to look it up.
Idiocracy.

For the few who actually use it, you will likely still be able to source it directly from Japan.

That would be great!

Any recommendations of places in Japan to get Velvia 100 from?

Much appreciated

David

Check Japanese Amazon. I’ve bought lots of film that way. A guy on photrio sometimes will make purchases for folks in the US. He once bought me four boxes of Velvia in 220.

I do use Velvia, and appreciate its unique qualities, though it took me a long time to learn how to use it well.
Does anyone yet know what this will mean for U.S. based processing labs, such as Dwayne's? Will the EPA regs prohibit them from handling Velvia 100, as I suspect? I've a fair amount of it in my freezer, and would hate to have those rolls join the roll of Kodachrome X on my shelf of collectibles.

It’s unlikely that thought has occurred to them yet, don’t give them any ideas.

I really hope that the retreat from the US market does not mean that Fuji will axe production of the film entirely. After all, the US are likely their biggest market and Fuji"film" have been on a brutal killing spree these past years.

I am not a Velvia shooter per se, but seeing the options dwindle is always very worrying. Especially when I think of the money that I have invested in film gear. The nicest of Hasselblads will be worthless if there is no film left to shoot with it. Maybe I should pare down my collection... Or maybe I should not worry about the discontinuation of a film I rarely shoot in a country I don't live in...

Poor Ken Rockwell, though... :D

The present iteration of the EPA is little more than anglophonic Brussels clones. One thing is certain, the Euro-mandarins are sure to follow suit.

I just bought a few extra rolls to add to my stash for Colorado this fall. B & H already shows Velvia as discontinued and no way to buy it there. I found it on Amazon. I was shocked at the price--$29.95 a roll! Amazon is out of 120 Velvia, but they had 35mm.

I don't like the way Ektachrome renders color in Colorado, so it's no substitute--although it's great for Missouri's springs and rivers. I'll consider Provia in the future for Colorado.

$29.95 a roll? Time to break out the easel and the oil paints ;)

I know. And Provia is no cheaper, and I see that Ektachrome is $22.00 a roll! I like shooting slides to project on my big screen; but it looks like we are being forced into digital, whether we like it or not.

....I thought TMY 5x7 was expensive when it hit $360 USD (+ 30+% Canadian exchange + shipping) for 50 sheets......

I've got a large box of TMy 5x7 in cold storage and a pristine vintage 5x7 contact print frame.....both of which I don't need.

Thanks Hap. I still use my Durst 138, but i switched to 4"x5". I print to 16"x20" and occasionally 20"x24".... so 4"x5" is more than adequate. I was shocked when I sold my stock of 5x7" films and holders......that brought in substantially more than my Deardorff! Like trading in your old car on a brand new one and getting cash back.

Almost $1.00 per 35mm shot? No way I'd deal with that. It's getting to the point that B&W will be the only "cheap" way to do 35mm. Well, it's already there really.

I've been so spoiled with a good freezer stash of films acquired during the good ol' days. But, I'm slowly reducing my film use to B+W, all formats.

Looking at prices they want for film at B+H or Freestyle, I'm having a case of "future shock". And, I knew that prices had gone up...just didn't know how much.

Even "used" film at Photrio or craigslist is being offered at krazy prices. I thought the dude was on drugs who offered expired Neopan 1600 stored at unknown room temp for $30+ per roll. But, I'm pretty sure someone bought them.

I'm currently leaving color print film. Only keeping the 120 already in the freezer to slowly use up. Putting the last stragglers of my 35 stash on RFF classifieds soon. All expired and many unboxed but stored frozen and I feel sheepish asking $3 per roll. Too much?

When I left slide film my last 35mm rolls of expired but stored frozen all sold before I could go get a glass of water. At $3.50/roll on RFF classifieds. So go figure...

I'm not sure what I will do when (if ever) I exhaust my B+W stash. Its not so large that I can't imagine the day. I hope B+W film is still around and reasonably priced. My last purchase was Adox CMS and I think it was $10-20 per roll  so I'm already paying up.

I wish you the best Velvia users.
