I have recently bought a G1 and this evening I tested its low light shooting capabilities with a Jupiter 8 lens. While it is surely capable of good results, a lot of the pictures taken at ISO1600 show extreme horizontal banding in the dark areas, mostly prevalent in the blue channel.

While it is possible to control that phenomenon to a certain extend with post processing I am wondering, if this is normal, or if my camera is just faulty.

Now overall the camera's handling in good light is just fine and it is a consequent digital design with for example its software correction of lens distortion, but the sensor could really need some improvements in terms of dynamic range, high ISO performance and especially banding. I can live with noise, but banding is a no go.

Another thought, while I am at it. It was raining slightly tonight and I was a bit afraid of getting the camera out. Weather sealing would be well appreciated for future versions. These are my two major suggestions for improvement. Apart from that the camera is a fine example of well thought out engineering, but I am not so sure if I will keep the camera.

Here is an example of the phenomenon.

The flares are due to a not so good haze filter.
