G1 or G2 for Weddings

Hey all!

I have a G1 and five lenses that I have been using for a variety of projects, and lately I have been doing a few weddings... and it may end up leading into more than a few more. For digital, I am picking up a second body (E-1), as I can not just keep barrowing my backup (which I have been doing). Now for the film side I am thinking of picking up a second body.

Currently I use a G1. Since I have five lenses for it, and am quite familiar, I figured on a second G. Now, my question is this:

Are the improvements made in the G2, worth the weirdness of changing interfaces and features between a G1 and a G2 in the stressful situation of shooting a wedding; or would I be better off just grabbing another G1 (a pair of G2s is not an option)?

Thanks everyone for your input.

Different interfaces in stressful situations may be the point where a G1 is your best choice. OTOH the G2s infrared AF is much better than the red AF assist on the G1 and personaly I like the G2s layout better.

For my travel needs I thought about a G1 as a cheaper backup to my G2 and after some playing in a camera store I bought a TVS, which turned out my first choice daylight camera when I rode crowded busses in Cuba last year.
And as it turned out, I didn't need a backup, didn't even need my spare batteries :)

Socke is right when it comes to use under stressful situations. If you're used to the G1, get a second one for backup.

I personally don't care much about the G2, so haven't really tried to compare them because I've been immensely happy with my G1. Can you improve on it? I'm sure, but for my needs, it's been a good performer.

A second G1 is where I was leaning. Sounding like that is so far a concensus.

Thanks all!

Seems that the G2 has a better viewfinder too...maybe that's the most important upgrade in a wedding low-light situation..the better AF too...
I don't think that the interface would be so different....when I'll need another G-body, I'll grab a G2.... OT: the Italian Photoshow is so near (this we) and I will ask about some future G-projects..

The interface between the G1 and G2 is not all that different. They look a lot different, but are not all that different in actual operation. I used to have both, and switched back and forth between them with no trouble at all.

The main difference is that the G2 has a focus button on the back, which is also one of its biggest advantages over the G1. But if you are uncomfortable dealing with this difference, you can easily ignore the focus button.

To me it would make more sense to add a G2 body, so that you would gain its extra capabilities (faster X-sync speed -- good if you need to do synchro/sun at your weddings; more positive AF; faster framing rate.) But only you can decide whether the operational differences would be enough to throw you. I would suggest at least trying a G2 before you decide, so you can see for yourself whether or not it would be easy for you to switch back and forth.

My 2 cents worth

I recently added a G1 body to my G2 + 28/45/90/TLA200. I've shot 1 roll thru the G1 so far. I think the biggest difference to me is that G2 has a better viewfinder (larger and somewhat brighter though not much). The parallex correction on the G2 is also more user-friendly. It does focus a little faster too. Other than that there is little difference between them.

As a matter of interest, what flash are you going to use? I think this may make more difference to the final result.

Olympus FL-50 with Quantum 2x2 Turbo :D

It has gobs of power, and nice auto feature.

Please note that I am not looking for a "backup" or "Primary" camera. I believe in switching cameras as the film runs out. When I am running low on film, I wave over to my assistant, she grabs the lens I want, snaps it on the camera she already laded, and we trade. She strips the film, loads the camera, and has it ready for round whatever we're on.

This has to be fast, and in truth, rarely will I have time to go: oh, wrong something... or bad setting... or rally anything else.

Cameras are on Pro-T stroboframes, and off we go.

Thanks!

Hi, I use a G2 for 35mm b/w when I shoot weddings with film. I think it has a faster shutter speed and better focusing than the G1 (which would fail me on occasion). while I don;t care for the TLA200 in low light due to red-eye and no second-curtain flash synch, the G2 is nice overall. But...... the G1 is currently more affordable. So it's a toss up. A black G2 looks cool to the clients as well.
