A couple of weeks ago I asked around to see if anyone had ever tried to assess the quality of shots of a G2 lens versus a Zeiss SLR lens using a GA-1 accessory on a G2 body. I promised a quick experiment and here are the results.......Film was 100 Velvia, scanner is a Canoscan FS4000 at 4000 ppi using Vuescan. No noise reduction processing.

Shot on a very overcast day (tough shot). Camera was on a tripod. G Lens was a 45mm at f5.6. Zeiss lens was a 50mm (1.7) at f5.6 as well. As I said the light was weak so it was a very tough shot for the Velvia. First shot is an overview (called "Test") of the full picture, the next couple are crops indicating which lens it came from. The Test thumbnail might have to opened seperately. It was radically shrunk to the smallest size Jpeg that would fit in an upload. The original is a 54M TIFF (or 18MP). Please forgive my crop sizing capability but I wanted to muck around with the images as little as I could.

My comments.....both of these lenses are top of the line with MTF capabilities that are at the VERY top of any lenses. I was expecting the Zeiss SLR lens to not do as well due to the glass being that much further away from the film. In reality, it did very well. I'd have to give a slight edge to the G, but overall both lenses turned out pretty comparable results.

Comments welcome.
