Gallery Picks is an opportunity for you to post a heads up to what you have seen during the past seven days at RFF that you like.
There's no membership requirement, no criteria (except past seven days), no voting, no limit to the number of photos mentioned, and everybody mentioned is a winner.

Anybody can start the thread on a Monday.

Anybody can join in, it's a community event!

a really well built photograph. the women hold each other up, and the lines in their faces and bodies converge towards the top border. the light is gorgeous and luminous and magical.

so powerful and direct. i don't know that i would have the stones to take this photo. strong lighting and from-above thin shadows enhance the feeling. i think it's great.

lush, classy, beautiful, simple. well lit, cleanly constructed.

Hiding a Laugh © 2013 Hteasley

med_U37062I1362266001.SEQ.2.jpg

i don't know that this is the greatest photo in the world but it's the kind of photo i like to take. indoors, low light/available light, intimate moment. it really shows off the particular image quality of the m9.

Baby Sharks © 2013 Barnwulf

med_U29574I1362078872.SEQ.0.jpg

dreamy, moody, tonal, rhythmic between mountains, clouds, grass and billboard. the utterly absurd caption is icing, but there's plenty of cake underneath. i wish the jpg were bigger.

hospitals creep me out, and photos of people who are, to use robert's most wonderful term, outbound make me sad. but i liked this whole series a lot. it was fantastically tender. no melodrama, no misplaced emotion. just real. i thought this was the strongest of the bunch, symbolic of the whole and very strong in both composition and subject.

photo of the week for me. there are all sorts of little things i like about this photo. the line of the building that runs through his knees, the small bits of fabric at the bottoms of his shorts flapping back in the wind, the balance in the bottom between the huge concrete pier and the rounded wave, the musculature in his shoulder echoed in the ribs. the big things i like are the amazing balance and timing and tone, but the little things help a lot.

Another from Robert in a different vein...

And, continuing on the subject of grain elevators, a nice segue to Richard G's take on the same topic.... I especially like the houses in the foreground of this image which give us a sense of the monumental scale of the silos and how close they have been to the lives whose livelihood depends on their looming presence...

Love the balance in this one and I think the posters on the wall add
and don't detract from the photo.

Doomster caught something rather sad here as it was unfolding....

An amazing series of portraits from Yprimayadi.... this first one if my favorite, but they are all excellent.

Alex struck a nice balance in his composition while capturing someone else doing some fine balancing, too.

A superb composition from Bushwick1234

Luigi. I prefer his image of people looking La Gioconda than I did seeing the old gal in person (I don't mean the lady in the middleground, I mean Mona herself). I especially like the expression of the fellow on the left.

Can you have better timing than Richard does here?
Untitled - Photo 200844 © 2013 Semrich

And another from Richard. Quite an intense stare. And that face brings to mind the word tonsorial.

Jim shows us some irony with the baby sharks in the middle a great flat, dry basin with no water in sight for miles and miles....

Bonatto left me feeling as if I was intruding on a very private moment here....

I like the spare minimal and muted colors here from Bk1970, one of our masters of recording decay and oxidation.

Thanks for the mention, adam. I appreciate it.

I have a shamefully large number of picks. But out of ~480 photos or so, maybe it's not so many....

Luigi wrote that he hadn't quite opened his eyes when he shot this one morning recently. Here's what I wrote in reply: "Luigi, keep your eyes closed. This is terrific. The de-focused look is absolutely perfect for this image. It totally dehumanizes these people, subsuming them to their environment and their urge to pursue upward mobility. Brilliant."
