i love the both of these. the first is so... present. the dark band behind the girl's head with the bright spot behind the head and the highlights just above her, the exposure for mouth and hands rather than eyes, the angle of her wrist, the innocent pink dress, the little wisps of hair. all spring moving into summer. the second is different but no less strong. her dress is fantastic, and it resonates with the OOF foliage. her dark hair fades into the tree trunk, and the line of her face just clears the edge of the tree. the little river is so bright. a few sunlight dapplings on the grass and on her dress. again, summer throwing off spring and winter.

both of these are wonderfully constructed photos. the first one looks like a set piece, everything so geometrically perfect and yet with the randomness of human motion. the lines of heads and faces meet with background lines so well. the second one is a brilliant capture, wonderfully seen and timed. but the angle from which it's taken, the line-up and the supporting details (the man's back against the door details, the placement of faces and top hats within architecture) make it superlative.

she's caught unaware, adjusting a strap and having a smoke. very casual and very easy. she's all curves in the middle of a whole bunch of strong, straight lines.

soft northern light, strong lines all over the frame, and then soft curves on the body and in the curtains. i really, really love the little shadow and highlight on her back and the softness of tone throughout.

this is the kind of photo i like to take, and it's a bit of an indulgence for me. i know it's not the most technically brilliant type of photo, but it often feels very satisfying to find a quiet moment in a room with strong side-lighting and to shoot against the light. sometimes a little magic happens, and in this case it did. the woman has a little equipoise in her posture, the lighting on the floor and the doorframe is delicious and the exposure is perfect on the bed.

photo of the week for me. so many of the photos this week bring to mind the change of seasons, of northern climates coming out of winter and into a short, glorious summer. this photo brings to mind the humid smell of a new york subway, as the cool tunnel air changes places with the hot sidewalk air through the mouth of the subway entrance. the woman's sun hat and thin blouse bring all that up for me, as does the strong light on the stairs. the angle of light, the patterns on the stair treads, the holding of the handbag at a certain angle... all fantastic details for me. very, very evocative.
