.
In spite of that some really good submissions.

thanks Klaus and Shirley! I've been away from this thread for a while, please excuse me...
I loved Keith's emotional portraits of Ash Deen(aka Karen Smith). A very strong series from someone I consider a master portraitist.
I also loved Johan's beautiful picture of his young daughter enjoying breakfast. These intimate family pictures are full of affection; I recommend them all.
More picks later.

Steve's photo brings out the wit and character of Lawrence. I've had the pleasure of meeting Lawrence - I wish I'd been able to take a portrait like this.

Stefan's pair of pictures of a woman on a rooftop contemplating suicide, and of the coffee shop patrons looking on (or choosing not to) is an example of reportage not often encountered by most of us. My admiration for keeping a level head to capture these two moving images.

I always look forward to Alex's portraits. On its own merits this is a very good portrait; by coincidence it appeared in the gallery adjacent to one of Keith's portraits of Ash Deen - the contrast could not have been more stark, if I was a gallery owner I'd have hung these two photos adjacent to emphasise the impact of each.

What's going on here? There is tension in her posture and hands. She appears to be alone with drinks on the bar in front of her. There is a man oof in the background. We don't know the story, but the title suggests she's waiting for her date, perhaps in vain given the line of drinks on the bar and the fact she appears to be unaccompanied. Maybe he is late. I like photographs like this that suggest stories about real lives, in all their complexity and ambiguity.

"I can't ever get my grandparents to look at the lens, or even pretend they like each other. But every now and then, they sit close enough for me to snap a photo. This is a 75% crop."
Wonderful photo. So close yet so distant. There is a biting irony to the poster behind your grandmother and eternal optimism behind your grandfather, echoed in his face. Well done.

The black cat totally dominates the negative space around it. It's the master of its territory. Cats have fascinated humans since ancient times and have a strong association with sorcery and witchcraft. This urban pussy continues that proud tradition. Nice tones and rendition from the M9 and C-Biogon, too.

What's the story? A young boy with basketball and satchel runs at speed past a woman at night. It's a split second catch and we'll probably never know.
