The Gay Pride Parade is this Sunday June 30th. The parade begins at noon at 36th and 5th Avenue and ends at Christopher and Greenwich.

I imagine this years parade to be especially festive.

Yeah, I'm torn. I have non-photography plans that day, but may have to make my friend roll through there for a few photos.

Wish I could make it up to The City for the parade this year, but I'm pretty well tied down by pre-existing commitments. I've been several times in the past- I remember when the stepping off point was Central Park, running down 5th Avenue to Christopher & Greenwich. Has the parade shrunk, or is it just curmudgeonliness on the part of the city?

Unfortunately I also have non-photography plans that day. I'll plan on attending the July RFF meet.

This year will be a lot more of a celebration due to defeat of DOMA. I remember when Gay Marriage was legalized in New York how happy people were. The community was so happy.

Shooting Sunday is an opportunity to record history.

If anything it is likely to contain the expected large crowds.

Last year the Mermaid Parade was a record 750,000 spectators, but after Hurricane Sandy it almost didn't happen due to a loss of funding. This years Mermaid Parade was small.

I think the event was curbed in size to limit the expense of security. It costs a lot of money to have the best police force on the planet, and I say they kinda do many impossible things to keep the public safe.

I'm thinking because this is a historic event that there will be massive crowds. The NYPD will be very busy.

I plan on going, but will probably be hanging out further down the route.

I will probably wander between 8'st & 6'ave and the festival on Hudson st.

I hope some of you guys will enter a photo from this weekend's shooting in the Decisive Challenge which is running this weekend. Always nice to see some NY entries!

Have fun!

If I go up to SF on Sunday, it will be very early morning before the parade. I like to wander through the prep and setup, see all the goings on before the crowds get there. Once the parade begins, I head out of town... :)

Last night I was in the City at Town Hall (Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration concert) and after the concert I saw the Empire State Building illuminated in rainbow colors (new LED technology) but I only had the Monochrom with me ;-(. Darn ;).
Maybe I still go back in tonight to capture that, it looks amazing and do some night shooting for the Decisive Summerr Challenge but then I might not come in again for the parade tomorrow.

Kent,

I might have some shots. I will be developing Friday, but I need one of my friends to scan.

I walked the entire parade route in solidarity. Didn't shoot but a few shots of the parade. My goal was to capture the day, spirit and energy of the event rather than the parade. I got swept up in the happiness of the gay community, and for me it was a very emotional day.

I shot a Nikon F3P with Noct-Nikkor. I used a MD-18 data back so the date is marked inbetween frames.

Never did get out to make photos this weekend. It was oppressively hot in the South Bay. But a wine tasting luncheon at a friend's place in San Mateo, late afternoon, brought welcome thermal relief, a lot of good discussion of the goings on with Prop 8, DOMA rulings, and general joy to share.

Happy Pride!

I'm hoping that my shots come off as intended. It was somewhat overcast and I was shooting Acros at 100 without filters.

At the end of the parade, at Christopher and Greenwich I took a series of shots of this fit muscular older guy on a Segway. It was great to have a F3P with motordrive because Christpher did this circular dance on the Segway with two flags. I blasted away, and after about a dozen shots I took notice that the "Freedom Tower" loomed in the background.

I shot the Noct-Nikkor at F2.8. Generally the Noct-Nikkor is a Bokeh machine with soft and smooth OOF, but I figure I shot about 10-12 feet away. I'm also hoping that the overcast helps my exposure and that Christopher is not back lit. For me the diffused light, I hope is a good thing. In this composition I need the Freedom Tower to be recognizable.

Also towards the end I lowered my position and caught more sky. I expect some back lighting effect. Regardless I think there's a possibility of an iconic shot that has history.

Good thing I have Christopher's card, just in case I need a model release. I'm excited about the possibilities, and I hope I don't experience the agony of defeat Friday when I develop.

P.S. Forgot to mention that Christopher was scantily clad in tight briefs that were like a speedo.

PSS: Well I broke the rules here. My possible entry is no longer anonomous.

I was forced to attend last night as I got back from a cycling trip to Canada, got off at West 4th at 9, the crowds were unreal as we walked home. The police were nice and let us walk on closed streets.

I thanked some of the police for their contribution to a great event. I asked one cop if the parade was a headache for them and the response I got was, "Its not bad."

I'm thinking though that they don't want this every day though.

They seemed amazingly jovial, we went and ate at our local diner, which was filled with police. NYC police are a funny lot, at heart they are nice regular New Yorkers, sometimes they become confused when they try too hard to be police.

How true. LOL.
