Greetings,scholars:

It was a dark day when the invitation to join AARP arrived in the mail;a friend of 30 years said to me-"What's happened to us;we used to be hippies!"

I cant get with digital cameras;i pick up a digital retailing at $300 bills or better and it feels like a plastic imitation of a camera(can anyone recommend a digital SLR that feels good).

I lucked on to a Rollei 35S for $8.00 yesterday in a thrift store;to me,its not a lot of fun to shoot with;I actually like my Yashica Lynx or Electro 35 much better-but I can see why it have a cult of fans-

Like my Rollei TLR ,it a beautiful piece of machinery-its functional,high performance and a delight to look at and fondle(hope that doesnt sound too pervy).

I feel the same way about automobles-there is a very expensive import of distinguished lineage which a lot of the doctors I work with drive,but from a distance it looks like an number of ordinary cars;Im not impressed with the construction or finish either. That dont make em like......

Am I hopelessly geezered out or what.

One of my goals in life is to become an old coot.

And I like all the old stuff - even stuff from before my time. I admire it for what it is.

But, I also like all the new stuff. Music, computers, internet, cars, all that.

I live in a 1923 bungalow, but I have a wireless network and a security system I designed myself. I listen to Johhny Cash and Eminem/Linkin Park/Lords of Acid/ and you name it. I want another 1946 Willys CJ2A, but I drive a 2005 Kia Sorento. I like to process my own B&W but I scan the negs.

It's all good.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Could be. Do you find yourself tuning in to those FM stations that play classic rock of the '60s and '70s? And in your heart you know that music is better than anything being recorded today?

If you are talking about music-my other passion-I paid Renaissance Lute music on the classical guitar. Earlier than that,youre talking about the banging skulls with bones and blowing through seashells period of music.

I know I'm geezered because I don't know what the following things do:

MP3 players

TiVo

Blackberry

Am I missing anything important?

I love Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music (or is that ancient musicians?). My personal tastes nowadays go more towards what we call alt.country (whatever that is). And I love Bluegrass / Celtic and so on. Silly Wizard makes me very happy.

There was a music store in Denver near where I lived called "Gopher Baroque." I always thought that was clever.

I wanted to learn to play the mandolin, but never got around to it. So I program my midi instruments at 160 bpm and bang my head.

That's all old stuff now.

MP3 = iPod
TiVo = PVR
Blackberry = ... OK, I dunno.

And don't forget wardriving, bluejacking, and viral marketing.

Anyway, I try to keep up, but I don't care much about that stuff either. I usually build my own if I want it.

Best Regards,

Personally, I prefer the Konica Minolta SD IV. But, KM is out of that business now. You could get a refurb unit, I think. Other than that, the Nikon is about the only game in town for a dedicated 35mm scanner - I am sure they're pretty good, based on feedback.

I do B&W, color negs, and some slides - all seem to work fine. But I run Vuescan as my scanning software and Linux as my computer OS.

I've been doing that since high school and I'm only 35!

For sure I've got one foot planted firmly in the past. Real Rock music, vintage motorcycles, classic cameras. Heck, even my wife is 50 years old! 🙂

There's probably a significant difference between those of us who are young and using the tools before our time, and those of us who are simply using the tools of their childhood.

It's not nostalgia for me, since I only existed in God's mind then. It's just a fascination with the analog side of things, and an aesthetic sense that belongs to a different time.

God, I have that freakin' Jethro Tull album, on vinyl-original pressing, bought new, and I still consider it "late" Jethro Tull.

Blackberry= wireless email/cell phone. Old stuff.

Hey! I do that! And I'm not yet 36! 🙂

I do it because they have much less chatter between the song than those other stations. I can't bear listening to the useless drivel those presenters vomit into my ears.
