Before we lose power again I'd like to get this posted. The other day I dug out my wifes N2000 and SB 15 Speedlight and found that the Speedlight didn't charge up? Pulled the batteries just to discover the expiration date was 2003. Everything was corroded.I cleaned the unit as much as I could to no avail. I decided to toss it out. I installed new batteries in the N2000 and discovered that it wasn't responding. The red warning light blinked. You guessed it the camera batteries were equally old. Installed new batteries...nothing but the red blinking light. Right now I'm hoping against hope that the camera is salvagable. So while I've always thought myself aware it turns out I'm not. Is there any wizened reader who can offer some salient advice before I throw the camera out too?
My only advice...check batteries!

I think the N2000 is the non-autofocus version of the N2020. I just bought one of those. Did the camera suffer a battery leak or were the batteries just dead? If there was no leak, you might have a some corrosion somewhere else in the circuit. Sometimes a small amount of corrosion on a wire or solder contact will weaken it enough so that it actually breaks but is not visible. Check the battery contacts closely to look for the tell-tale green fuzz. Use a Q-tip with a little houshold vinegar to clean it up and then wipe it thoroughly with water to get the vinegar out. The Nikon's are pretty resilient cameras and you shouldn't have to crap it because of a battery problem.

You probably could have salvaged the SB-15 too. I rehabbed an SB-18 recently that had extensive battery leakage. I took it apart, cleaned most of the contacts and exposed solder joints with lots of vinegar and then had to flush the entire insides with distilled water to get out the vinegar. I then thoroughly dried it in the sun for a day before installing batteries. Works like new.

Thanks guys. I already tossed the speedlight but am looking at the N2000 as we speak. I examined the camera carefully and find absolutely no sign of leakage but I will try your suggestion this afternoon.
You're right the N2000 is the manual focus version of the 2020. I bought this camera following my wife's hand surgery because she could no longer advance the film with her old FE and it was ignored for too long. The N2000 are tough cameras. Hope it survives...I'll begin using it. Again, I apprecate your advice and I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well we didn't lose power however I didn't make it to the store for vinegar because of a dead battery so I haven't had the opportunity to learn if my N2000 can be ressurected. Meanwhile I thought I might provide a list of cameras that I now have and have had.

Zeiss Ikon 2 w/5cm 1.5
Nikon F2 Photomic w/50mm 1.4 pre ai
Minolta srt 101 X 2 w/ some long tele lens

Plus dozens of cameras I bought to try out and later sold on ebay

My favorites in order are;

1.5 Minolta Hi-Matic 7 only because it's futzier
2 Nikon FG w/ series e 50. 1.8..does everything and then some
3 Fuji film Nexia 320 ixz MRC w/3x zoom the ultimate in pocket film cam
Sharp lens and shoots in 3 different formats...carry in glove box

You've had quite the collection there.

The Series E Nikkor lenses are said to be very good, optically speaking. I don't think their coatings are quite up to par with regular, heavy-duty Nikkors, but people like you and me will rarely notice that.

When you say the Hi-Matic 7 is futzier, do you mean it has manual control?

One thing you can do on the GSN is to change the ISO for over or under exposure. It's not ideal, but it'll do in a pinch.

One thing I do before I scrap something is to take it apart. If you're at the stage where you're considering scrapping something, you've nothing to lose by opening it up and having a look.

Also, you could put it on ebay and be honest. There are people out there who will know what the problem is simply by reading your description. They will buy it knowing that they can fix it in 20 minutes and resell it. At least you'd get something for it, right? There may be some poor guy who is missing a battery door or button. Maybe he has an N2000 with a dented chassis and needs a donor?

Thanks Jeremy and all....
My wife brought home some vinegar last night so work will begin today. As for my collection much has come and gone. As I mentioned somewhere else on the forum I've forsaken all but 50mm lenses for reasons I won't go into here.
50 1.8 series e lenses lack much but make up for it in portabilty and force one into thinking about what I do with the linitation.
I've never posted an image on this site for lack of expertise [I'm old] My favorite times to take a camera out are foggy mornings so I'm going to attempt to post a link to one of my serendipitous foggy morning shots. I arrived at my favorites beach in time to see a scene that instinctivly caused me to raise my camera...an slr and I have no idea of exposure time or even what film was in my camera.
hopefully the link will work,

And yes I take criticisms well..feel free.

Whatever you did, it resulted in a nice, very atmospheric, shot.

Thanks Jeremy, Paul , Mike et al...
I have no problem selling something on ebay as is. My feedback is 100%. I've scored the Minolta Hi-Matic 7 a 1.5 because loading can be a bit more trying at times. I still consider it an excellent RF... Just futzy.
I have a Nikkor 50 1.8 lens That is very cheaply made with 3 mounting screws instead of 5 and aluminum mount and while my series e is production line construction and requires a gentler hand I find it predictably good for my purpose.

I'm somewhat amazed that my link to my foggy morning scene came through.
My next stretch into the unkown is to learn how to post an avitar, signature etc.

Hi guys
My attempts thus far at reviving the N2000 have met with failure. I will keep trying. My purpose right now is to offer my Yashica gsn essentillay for the cost of shipping to someone who will appreciate it . I have some health issues and want the camera to go to someone who can use it. I'm particularly interested in
seeing a study of how Yashica has accomplished their near magical metering capability. The camera is not without issues. The film counter does not light. The over/under light both in the vf and on top light just fine. I would think these minor issues for a freebie. I've offered the camera to the forum member from whom I originally purchased the camera and haven't yet heard back from him. Alas..

I just spoke with the island member from whom I purchased the camera and he said that he couldn't in good conscious take it back since I had paid for it and in the spirit of someone getting the most out of it's use I should give it away to a forum member.....so in that spirit it is now offered.

Whisper, you appear to be a dealer. Is it your thought of turning a profit from this camera? Is this something you will later critisize and complain that you got a bad deal? Let's be as honest as possible out front okay?
