Back to film
I like to shoot mainly ISO400 films, sometimes pushed to ISO1600, almost always 35mm. To date, my scans have had a "stressed" look to them. Sharpening has dramatically enhanced the grain, and I've generally been really unhappy with the look. The choice has been between little or no sharpening, or sharp grainy images. I've persevered because tonally I am getting flavours from Neopan/Delta/TriX/HP5 that I don't get quite as effectively from digital.
My scanner is a Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite II, which is not the same as the 5400 models. I bought it second hand. It came with some software that never worked, but I have always used Vuescan so that was no problem. Out of sheer frustration with the grain issues, I have also been evaluating Silverfast and have had a degree of success achieving a different look, but not really tackling the grain.
Last night, I located and downloaded the correct update for the Minolta software and managed to get it working (previously it would work but couldn't save files). After a bit of reading on the subject of Grain Aliasing, I decided to try it with the GEM feature which is built in to the software. I have compared with Vuescan and Silverfast, and it seems I'm getting better results with the Minolta software, and the GEM is really getting rid of my grain problem!!
A tale of joy. I think GEM is a godsend.
