Gigabitfilm thoughts

Lots of good discussion if you do a Google search on: "Gigabit film" site:photo.net

Reminds of the chase for the sharpest lens: ridiculous. As one comment in a pnet thread puts it:

"...the threshold of usable resolution is around 50-80 lpmm. Beyond that it is hard to achieve......"To move beyond this threshold to values of 80 or 90 lp/mm, can be done, but the additional care, accuracy and control over all parameters is extremely demanding and you may question if this additional amount of control and energy is worth the effort"

Main point is most people's technique (or lack of a good one) is more a factor than any lens or film resolution.

Besides that I'm confused by so many people trying for the finest-grained films. Finer grain and better resolution does NOT translate into better sharpness, at least perceived sharpness anyway. The middle speed films (like FP4+ and Plus-X) will ALWAYS look sharper than any of the finer grained films at standard enlargement/print sizes (say 11x14, 16x20).

Don't know anything about Gigabit film, but I use SPUR Orthopan UR (developed in SPUR Nanospeed UR) and it's wonderful.

(seems to be the same stuff as ADOX® CMS 20 135/36)

In Camera Lens News 24, Zeiss claim to achieved 400 lpmm with the Biogon 25/2.8 ZM using this film.
