Sometime, it happened to me that the meter was dead after i tinkered inside one of my canonets (moving manually the needle can kill the meter)
I just used my brain and though about forcing the meter to work.
When it happens (while tinkering) i use this method.
There is a system wich activate the meter neddle and it works even if the meter is dead, but you'll have to insist.
The system is called : the canolite.
You have to put your canolite on it, a slow speed and mode A to activate the metering, and focus to different distances, the goal is to move the needle. and shot, the flash is used to shock the meter and it reactivates the meter even if the meter is working but stucked (generally around F2).
Sometime you have to do it for 5-10minutes, take the flash off and put it back.
If you see that the needle moves while you focus with the canolite, remove the flash your meter is working 😉
