I received a J12 that had an odd "golden" color; in fact it had been varnished at some point in the past. It was a rather good job, but it seems it had been done after the lens had had some corosion of the alluminium anyway...
So I had to re-polish it completely to get rid of the varnish, and of the corrosion; now it looks plendid !

I was just wondering if it was a common thing to do at the time, that varnish job ? (it's a 66xx lens)

My J12 is pretty golden, too. I figured it was just oxidation of the metal (although aluminum usually just turns a slightly dingy grey when it tarnishes). It just makes the lens look old. It still performs perfectly, so I don't really care. :)
