I need a good lens hood for my Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens. The original 48mm Canon S-50 hood seems to be quite expensive. I could get one from USA for $85, shipment charges adding around $30 and European VAT charges another $40 or so totalling around $150. For a simple lens hood that's pretty much for me.

So my simple question is: does anyone of you know good alternatives for the S-50? I don't particularly like those cheap rubber hoods but I wouldn't mind using a black metal hood from Olympus or Minolta for example if it's good quality and doesn't cause vignetting etc. Any ideas?

Depends on what filters you use. I never liked the S-50 myself.

I used 48mm filters and an old Hoya 48mm metal screw on hood. They come up on ebay from time to time. I also found a nice one from "Kalimar" that works and that I use on another 48mm lens.

Also working well is a 48 to 49 or 48 to 52 adapter, and then a short metal hood as you can buy them generic for these sizes. Then you can use 49 or 52mm filters which are plentily available.

Best,

Roland.

Try sending an e-mail to heavy2star on
ebay and tell hm what you are looking for
and you may get lucky. I have been using
one of his hoods on my Summicron DR and
it works just fine.

An alternative is the S-50 original hood for the 50/1.4

Not sure why it should be that expensive... I paid $7 for mine, and another $10 for shipping....

I have a good selection of 52mm high quality filters so I guess I'll find myself a 48mm-->52mm step-up ring first and see how it works.

Thanks everyone!
