Got a call from the repairers today. Apparently my V1 35/2 Summicron cannot be cleaned. The dust/muck inside is old fungus which has damaged the glass. :(

Not too disappointed though - even in this state the results are rather good :)

Time to scour fleabay for one that's clean inside but scratched outer surfaces ;)

A few things which may be worth considering:

Have you (or did you) try Optical Instruments in Balham? They can carry out all sorts of work on lenses which other repairers can't do, and (for what they do) are very reasonable. Their web site is here:

http://www.optil.co.uk/

Another alternative is Malcolm Taylor. He usually has drawers full of lens elements, parts, complete lenses etc.

My commiserations. I have the same lens, battered on the outside but perfect glass. Mine is an absolutely great lens, good luck with yours! :)

Which repairer is this Peter? i have just posted a very foggy Summaron 35/3.5 to Newton Ellis who should be looking at it tomorrow with a bit of luck - i hope my lens doesn't share the same fate!!

Update - lens returned today MUCH cleaner internally than it was previously. Fungus has damaged the coatings, as I was advised. No charge :)

John van stelten In the states cleaned my lens from fungus. If it hasnt etched In to the glass it will be ok. If he cant remove more than 75% it will be free of charge. He got rid of 100% of the fungus In mine.

The dust and muck has been cleaned, but due to not being able to remove the etched-on telltale signs of fungus it was returned at no charge. The repairer said the fungus was old, probably a couple of decades old. To remove the marks would involve polishing then re-coating the glass - not cost effective and could potentially ruin the lens.

Never mind - it's still a very useable lens (got pretty good results before I sent it away, which surprised me with the dust inside making the elements look opaque)
