I bought the M-coder/D-Coder kit from Popflash. Tony mailed it the same day, and I have coded 6 lenses, 5 of them successfully. I ran into a problem with the 50mm version 3 Summicron. It has a screw right where one of the black marks should go. The screw won't take the marker ink. I think it's a non-problem, as I don't think a 50mm really needs coding anyhow.
Once coded, Aperture shows the focal length, although it also displays "unknown lens." (Edit: this applies to the remaining lenses. No info is shown for the 50 that I'm having trouble with.) It does not show the lens' maximum aperture, nor does it show "Summicron" or "Elmarit." With chipped Nikkor lenses, more of this kind of info is available.
I have already had an outing with the M8.2 sans lens coding, and saw no problems with the shots. I'm looking forward to seeing some improvement now that the lenses are coded. Improvement in what, I am not sure. I coded my 21 & 24mm Elmarit ASPH; 28mm Summicron; 35mm Summilux ASPH; 75mm Summicron; and of course the 50mm version 3, which the M8.2 is not able to recognize.
I may code the 90/2.8 Elmarit and tele-Elmarit, and 75 Summilux, later. Or not. 75 and 90 are a bit long for use on the M8/M8.2.

A great article, thanks! I bookmarked it for reference.

Rob, greetings. I know you just coded your lenses, but I am curious about the longevity of the coding. Thanks.
PS, hope you are far enough away from all those tornadoes that hit other parts of the state.

JMQ: I just coded them yesterday. I plan on taking the coding kit on any trips where I take the M8, so I can refresh the coding when needed.
Some of the tornadoes wiped out a large area just about 4 or 5 miles north of us, around the airport area. Total devastation!

Here's a preliminary report. The coding wore off, on my 35mm ASPH Summilux, after two lens changes, enough that it already isn't being read.

Thanks Rob. I appreciate the feedback.
