I found a used Voigtlander grip for my Bessa-R and I'm undecided as to whether it actually adds functionality or just weight and size. I'm curious to know what others think. Do you use the grip? Why? Why not?

Do you mean the side grip? I really like it on my Bessa R. It makes the camera comfortable to grip and also makes the camera hang more evenly on the shoulder strap. After I got my side grip, I put it on, and have not taken it off.

I agree. The side grip doesn't add that much bulk or weight but it does make the camera handle a lot better, I think.

OK, it's good to hear positive comments. I've just recently got mine and haven't actually shot photos with the Bessa since putting the side grip on... just handling it at home playing around with it. So I presume the strap should be switched from the body lug to the side grip lug...

I switched my strap from the camera to the grip. I have seen some folks attaching both ends of the strap to the grip so they can carry the camera vertically...I suppose that will hold the camera OK but I don't trust a single lug to hold mine so that method is not for me.

I bought my Bessa R used with the grip attached, great accessory.
Although the R-D1 is thicker and higher, i sometimes miss the grip on her.
(I must admit: Never tried if the grip from the Bessa would also mount on the R-D1).

It just adds weight and size, as far as I'm concerned. The trigger wind, on the other hand, I do like.

Can't swear to it, but I looked into side grips when I got my RD1 The Bessa side grips were cheaper. I queried the Head Bartender; he said no -- not interchangeable.

I've got grips on all but one of my 35mm rangefinders. I like them... obviously. It is a cheap purchase. Try it and sell it if you don't like it.
