Hands on X100 preview from our local camera store

Thx for posting. I enjoyed the video. Them Fuji guys had better deliver with their new offspring when it hits the shelves and ends up in the hands of photogs with high expectations. Funny how reinventing the rangefinder with a digital difference kicks up such a buzz. The "New Mini" or "New Beetle" syndrome I guess. Should appeal to both young lads and old geezers alike, with a lot of age groups in between. Well, we'll see. I'll wait until the teething problems are over though...

Been on the fence but just got on the list at Precision Camera after watching this video. Have tried both a Leica M8.2 and Nikon D7000 this week and returned both. Guess I will have to vacation with my daughter in Istanbul at the end of March with film Leicas.

Leica M8.2

Leica M8.2

The Leica M8.2 is a gorgeous camera. It is well built and since I have lenses from 15 to 90 mm the 1.3 crop factor was not a consideration. And I had been doing a lot of reading on the web since we don't have camera stores in El Paso.

I returned it because of the noise above ISO 640. Now the camera is two years old (which is a couple eons in digital technology). I figured for $4000 it should just be pretty much flawless. I really wanted to keep it but its performance was disappointing. And I am not ready to spend $7000 on an M9. This is only one of many hobbies.

I had a Nikon D7000 on the way the same day I returned the camera to Tamarkin. The D7000 was light years ahead of the M8.2 but too big and too clunky. I prefer fast primes and there just are not that many out there for a DX format. So the D7000 went back to Amazon that evening. As an aside, I pulled my daughter's D40 out and started playing with it. It has been setting in her room since she went to college three years ago. And the price is right.

I have been thinking about the X100 for awhile but wanted more info then just hype from the manufacturer. The video answered a lot of questions. I just wish it would be out a couple weeks sooner as I have a vacation in Istanbul 25 March with my daughter. So she will carry the Canon S90 and I an M4 and M2. Since I have been using film since 1966, I guess I will just have to make do (not really much of a problem since I prefer film but I am determined to give digital a shot).

Wow..... This video is a great review of the X100. I've got to say that prior to this I didn't think too much about this camera. I've used the M8 before and while I loved using the camera, it cost's (even though I paid slightly less than 2k) was too prohibitive since I mainly used one lens only. I just might end up getting this, though probably not until next year. I've wanted a quality small digital with a analog feel for a while (only the M8 satisfied these requirements thus far, just to much $$). The video mode is a plus too.
