Has anyone ever gotten the urge to purge?

I've found myself in this bizarre situation where I stepped back and looked at all the gear I have acquired over the past few years and I suddenly got the urge to rid myself of a lot of it. I have way too much stuff and I feel almost guilty because I've sorta rotated my few favorites and settled on them while the others sit unused. I'm sure others have felt this as well. For those who have purged much of their collection, do you feel a sense of relief that you are freeing up some $ and more importantly aren't spending time deciding which of your 7 50's to mount on your M? Or do you regret selling them? I have a feeling I'm gonna be listing a bunch of stuff soon...

Done that a couple of times.. And initially it seems to help against that nagging feeling that I have more gear than talent. But somehow, after a while, stuff starts to accumulate again, and I'm back where I started.

I have and I am.
I'm currently purging a load of living history uniforms and kit, and I'm thinking about selling off a load of cameras that fall outside of my particular collecting niche.

Yes and I'm very close to doing it. I'll probably keep my D4 and my Sigma Merrill compacts for digital and my OM system for film ... and maybe a medium format camera.

Sure. Kind of constantly. ;)
I'm really torn there. On the one hand I would like to sell most of my stuff and only keep the things I really love, on the other hand I want to be prepared for different scenarios. I cannot shoot all the subjects and projects with just my favourite camera and two or three lenses. So I keep my stuff. And some just for the sake of having them.

Yes, but my Oblomov inclinations usually get the better of me - Oblomov is a character in a 19th Century Russian novel who seems incapable of making important decisions or undertaking any significant actions.

Last week when I realised I have nine versions of the Pentax/Takumar 50mm...

But seriously, I get the urge to purge all the time, which is odd because I also get the urge for GAS all the time.

Having lots of gear doesn't suit the way I actually shoot (I'd happily travel the world with an M2 and a couple of primes), but I'm horribly prone to acquiring more.

Such inclinations would come in very handy for, say, deciding whether to marry the manipulative gold digger. :D

Yep had a few purges ….. sometimes regretted and bought stuff back but on the whole not.

Never gotten rid of M bodies and M lenses but 35mm slrs and compacts have gone.

Digital I have a dslr and an A7r2 ,the A7S went .
Digital compacts: the GR went only to be replaced and I still use my two Merrills .

Yes, to fund urgent needs like education or monthly bills

Some other times I have no idea what to do with the money so I end up buying other gear.

If you decide to purge, it's a good market for sellers nowadays because prices are high.

All the best!

Whenever I eat pineapple.

I’m pretty continually changing things around, with a slow reduction in number of items.

There will be a purge in my house very soon. My wife insists. :D.

Actually, I was moving that way myself, but since we are downsizing for a potential move to a small house, it will be sooner than later. It just occurred to me one day a little while back that I seemed much happier when I had much less gear.

Easier to avoid the Oblomov problems when you don't have to obsess on which 50mm f/1.4, or which body, or tripod, or ...

I'm sort of looking forward to it actually.

I have way too much stuff, and am really looking forward to all you guys upcoming purges so I can get more!

My problem is almost every piece I pick up to use from what I have I love using. I don't have favourites!
But there are two items where I don't feel this - my Minolta Prod20s (retro looking film P&S kamera) - because it is a very cheap camera dressed up and always disapoints me in its results; and my beautiful black Kiev 4AM because it gets in the way of shooting. But the lens on it is nice.
