I am about to....well maybe....send my troubled g1 to ToCad for a fixing but I wanted to hear from someone, anyone who has sent something to them and actually gotten it back. I have made the calls there and like everyone else have had no reply. I sent the email and never heard a word back. I just want to make sure I am not sending my camera away and never going to see it again. Anyone?

Try KEH
Try KEH
I understand everyone has problems w/ Tocad. I've spoken to the repair dept at KEH and they do work on the G system. Makes sense since they do sell quite a bit of G equipment. Good Luck

Well shipped out the G1 to KEH yesterday. I really like them, having bought much of my equipment from them. They said they should be able to fix my camera, lets hope so. Ill keep updated, better than dealing with tocad.

Let us know how you make out.... would be interested to know if there is indeeed an alternative.
I have been considering selling off the rest of my Contax because of the lack of ToCAD support.

contax G???
contax G???
I am in the same boat with you Issy....I have a G1, 21,35,45 and have been thinking of unloading the 21 lately and the 45 because of the lack of support. I seem to have the worst luck with choosing products that after I have invested in them they are discontinued by companies and left for dead. I am either going to sell it off or invest in another body and use till they die. I just hate to think that once a camera has a problem it is time to just toss it and buy another used body since the support for them is so poor.

I too would be interested to hear your experience with KEH repair, Jason. I had bought a G1 from them but soon found a problem with the shutter actuating but producing blank exposures about 10% of the time, and sent it back. I expect they must have fixed it and sold it again. I replaced it with a G2... This was just last Spring; my whole goal in this was the 21mm f/2.8, quality at a bargain. I figured I was taking a chance on support and repairs, and the same concern by others is probably what drove the prices down within reason.

Doug,
That is the same affliction that my G1 had. It would not open the shutter sometimes. Very inconsistent. Some rolls were 100% and others were half empty. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Now, on the flip side.... one of my Hexar RFs was at K-M when they pulled out of the business, and I had no problems getting the repair complete... the repair (correcting a habit of loosing frame count in the middle of the roll) was fixed and done in a timely manner.
So whether a line is still in production is obviously not as important as the level of support you continue to get, either from the manufacturer, or via a third party.

I would have no qualms sending my G2 to KEH. That is my plan if it ever needs it.

I noticed that Mark Hama's repair shop is located in Marietta, Georgia which is right outside of Atlanta. That makes me wonder if KEH simply sends their Contax service over to him to fix. If so, it's very good news indeed as Mark's work has an excellent reputation. Also, he used to be the service manager for Contax U.S. and was trained by Yashica in Japan.
Of course if it is true, I'd be inclined to bypass KEH altogether and simply send the gear to Mark. His URL is:

BTW, by all accounts, Mark's Japanese is much better than his English and he may not be very responsive to inquiries.

Update:
Mailed the camera out on Thurdays, KEH got if Friday, and got an email Monday after noon to an inqury I sent stating the camera had been recieved, repairs were made by technition and now as long as it passes through QC test it will be mailed back in a week. Talk about service! I would not hesitate to send in any G equipment to KEH for repair. Cant wait to get the little fella back.

Well, a week and a half from shipping the camera out to getting it back fixxed. KEH was very quick and I would recommend them to anyone who needs to get a G worked on. Now I need to go and shoot a few rolls to make sure it is all fine.
