Helos-103 for Olympus E300?

Hi Gas comrades,

I have been thinking about using Russian rangefinder optics on a modern digital, but not those hyper expensive M8s. And found out that only the Helios-103 might have the posibility for an Olympus E300 that needs 32mm to clear the mirror movement. The registration for J-8, J-3 are too short, but the H-103 seems to have enough room. One only needs a parts LTM lens mount and mount the lens group of the H-103 to the right regitration distance. The whole set is very compact, and the E300 is a low cost DSLR. Then you have a chance to try those very high qulaity Soviet Summilux without filter or inaccurate rangefinder problems.😀

I don't have an E300 yet. This is just an idea.

I also tried a Zeiss Tevidon 70/2.8 on a 300D for macro shots. Here is a wide open,100% crop, no any PS image of a water melon before it is consumed.😀

I've got an E500 and the kit lenses starting at f3.5 just aren't fast enough.
they are certainly bulky compared to my bessa r and cv35 kit.
would like to hear more interesting ideas you have.

not sure i'd have the skills to take anything apart though... workable if there are existing adapters one could use.

this may be a completely stupid idea... but what about cine lenses on 4/3rd sensors? would that work?
 
I guess the Jupiter-11 might work, too (well, yielding a 270/4 lens...)

You'd need a parts Contax mount. The lens would probably fit into the "throat" of the Four Thirds bayonet.

A guy has tried a modefied of the super sharp Zeiss Tevidion 100/2.8 on a 4/3 DLSR and the lens focus to infinate. I reversed mounted my Zeiss Tevidon 70/2.8 on a Canon 300D and it focus from about 1.5m-infinate, but only the center 70% image is sharp.Other 35mm cine lenses would cover the image area, but only those with a rear lens element registration of 32mm or longer would focus to infinate.
I hope someone in Russia could hear this idea to make some Helios-103 in Olympus 4/3 DSLR mounts. Some company should think about making a digital camera for those LTM lenses. There is a demand from old LTM lens users. If only Olympus makes an E-series DSLR with a registration of only 3.5mm shorter. The price is right.😀

Hi Philipe,

You need to set the lens closer to the sensor, so I think a parts M42 or M39 mount may be more suitable. The I-50,I-22, J-9, J-11 are all O.K for 35mm SLRs so that they could also be used on a DSLR. I have some fine 35mm cine optics. I wish to use them on a DSLR like E300 or the old Pan-F type digital cameras. A 20mm/f2, and a 35mm/f1.28 is a good normal and portait lens on these cameras.

That's true for the Jupiters, but for the Helios? Is there a Helios-103 in LTM at all? I completely agree about 20s and 35s. What's the lens register for those lenses?

Hi Philipp,

The lens mount regitration distance is the same, but back focusing distance from the rear element to the film plane varys. It is 28.9mm for the 35/1.28, 30.01mm for the 20/2, 30.71mm for the 50/1.3, and 28.98mm for a 18/2. these can be used on a M8 or RD-1 digital rangefinder. Someone already sell these Arriflex standard mount lenses with an adaptor on the big bay. I think Olympus could make a camera like their old Pan-F in the E-300 price range for these lenses.🙂
