My focusing patch on my R-D1 is misaligned on the vertical axis.. Horizontally it lines up fine but maintains what appears to be a double image vertically. The shots look fine, clear, sharp.. How do I repair or is there a good shop in the NY area that someone can recommend?

Thank you in advance..

I've never tried fixing a camera. Is this an easy enough that I can handle it on my own or am I better off sending it out to a technician?

to adjust the alignment is pretty easy, at least i have tried it and been successful.
you need small screwdrivers and a fairly steady hand.

I finished adjusting my RD-1 vertical alignment just a few minutes ago! I'm far from a handy man but it's quite do-able. Took me about 10 minutes.

Look here for how to remove the hotshoe:

Underneath the hotshoe you can see the vertical adjustment screw.
See here on which screw to turn:

For vertical you'll only have to turn the right-most tallest screw. Clockwise lowers the moving image and CCW raises it. You'll probably only have to turn it 45 degrees or less.

The only special tool you need is a small screwdriver, like one you'd adjust your glasses with. And some small pliers will help also. To push the hotshoe steel clip I use a credit card.
