Hi Folks,

I bought a Dimage Scan Elite II last year and used it at my dad's house. First I got an error=4 message saying no scanner connection, but after turning it on and then turning on the computer it worked fine. Well, moved it to my own house and tried the same, but all I get is the same error and annoying blinking green light. Any ideas? I installed the software, then plugged it in and tried it both ways, first turning on the computer and then scanner second and also turning on the scanner first and the computer second. Nothing's working.

It's SOO annoying! Any help would be appreciated.....John/sooner

Hi John.

I have the Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II, but never had this kind of problem.

I power on the scanner after the PC has booted, then I directly launch the Dimage Scan Elite5400 Utility, it takes a little time to start (calibration), and there we are.
The green light is blinking all the time.

Try the free demo of Vuescan and see if it does the same. Vuescan can install its own driver, and I've found that works every time (my scanner is the earlier DiMage Scan Elite II, not the 5400).

Thanks for the tip. I installed Vuescan but it said no scanner was found on the computer, even though the Dimage is plugged into a front usb port with the green light blinking incessantly. So why is the computer refusing to recognize the scanner?

Some tips

Some tips

I have the Dimage Scan Dual IV.
Some time ago I had the same problem.
There were a bunch of things I did to try solve it.
I don't know which one nailed it.
But I don't have the problem anymore.

Here's a list:
(1) Install Service Pack 2 for your Windows XP,
remember to get all the patches . . . especially USB ones.

(2) Update your bios firmware . . . if your pc is old.
check with the motherboard manufacturer.
Sometimes switching off legacy USB support in BIOs might help . . .

(3) Use Dimage Scan within Photoshop. The standalone application isn't so stable.
Use the drivers provided on the CD, not the ones from Minolta's website.
The ones from the website don't work . . . I don't know why.

(4) Does your PC have USB 2.0 support?
Are the hub drivers correctly installed?

(5) Use good USB cable with ferrite core.
Are the connectors clean?

(6) Try another USB jack on your PC, USB ports have voltage limits . . .
But it shouldn't be a problem though.

To save you sweat . . . find a friend who is good with pcs ask him,
becos 9 out of 10, it's software/driver problem, and not hardware related.

The scanner is not prone to mechanical fault.

My two cents.

I have the Mk1 version and I recall that being a pig at first, you had to load the software before anything was plugged in or it refused to play, and it didn’t like any other scammers attached; check in the instructions and follow them to the letter was the only way I got it going. Once I’d got started it’s been fine since if that’s any conciliation

Thanks, I loaded the software on a laptop and then, with the laptop turned off again, turned on the scanner, then turned on the laptop, and it recognized the scanner and works okay now. However, I wanted to use it with my desktop, so the question is why didn't it run with a newish pc running Windows XP versus working on an older laptop running Windows XP? Same USB cable, so that rules that out. Hmmm....very frustrating!

I have the older 5400 and installed everything the way the installation instructions said to. I run XP on a newer PC. My routine is to start the PC and once it is up and running I turn on the scanner and then I launch the Minolta scanner soft ware. The program comes up and the scanner does it's usual set up.
