I have this friend see, (yea, a friend - that's it!) who wasn't paying attention some twenty years ago and doubled-up a few negative strips in the storage sleeves. After many seasons of midwest heat and humidity, these strips have apparently glued themselves together. My, how embarrassing.

Dear RFF film expert, any suggestions for this poor sad soul? How does one safely separate these stuck together negative strips?

I'll pass the word to my friend, who will be forever greatful.

If I had a freind like that I would probably tell him/her to take one set of negatives and soak them in distilled water with a few drops of Photoflo or (Calgon) if I didn't have Photoflo. Then check them in 30 minutes to see if they will seperate.

A good long soak in tepid water will sometimes do the trick.

Film emulsion is like glue. However, it will sometimes release if soaked long enough. The worst case is emulsion side to emulsion side. If it is emulsion side to back, then you have a chance.

And if that doesn't work, leave them longer. Don't force it. Soaking them for a day or two won't make the situation any worse, and just might get them to come loose.
