Help with Canonet QL17 batteries

I´m waiting for a Canonet QL17.

This morning I went to a betteries´s shop and asked about the zinc- air battery 675.

The woman said me that this kind of batteries only works for about 4-5 days! then, they stop working.

IT´S TRUE? I´m gonna be ruinned?

I think they last a lot longer than that, unless you rig them to power a small light bulb. I put in a zinc-air Wein cell (px625) in my QL17 G-III over 4 months ago and it works fine with regular use. Ive also heard its possible to extend the life of the battery by covering up half its "breathing holes" to slow the oxidation process.

That's BS. I've had them last more than 1 year. Maybe 2.

yEP. i HAVE ONE IN A ql17 THAT IS ALMOST 1 YEAR OLD AND STILL WORKING. 2 OF THEM LASTED ALMOST 1 year in a Gossen Luna-Pro.

I know somewhere in Asia there is still LARGE amount of mercury battery available, if you can find some. Or you can buy the battery adapter from Jon goodman and use the hearing aid battery instead. It works very well.

Battery Life: The batteries last a long time IF:

You are very careful to turn the aperture ring off of the green "A" to one of the numbers. This is the only battery switch the camera has. When the aperture ring points to "A" the battery is turned on. If you were to leave it on A then the battery might go dead in a few days.

Go back to that shop and tell the lady that two guys from Texas can't be wrong. We say, "BS". She is spreading information that is not true.

As mentioned, don't open all the holes. That helps. Also, if you tape the holes shut during periods of non-use, they stop depleting altogether. This works well on the GIII since it is so easy to get the battery out. Turn the ring off A. All this has been mentioned except taping the battery holes closed.

Even without these taping precautions, I have had the Wein Cell 675s last 9 months to a year.

I love it when people have no idea what they are talking about on the items they are supposed to be selling.

The best thing about the Wein Cells is that they are the exact voltage for the camera, they hold a flat voltage curve for their lifespan, and they are exactly the right size, at under $5.00 online from a number of sources.

These are my experiences with the same equipment exactly. Batteries last quite long, but nothing last forever. Well... maybe GAS lasts forever.

You are very careful to turn the aperture ring off of the green "A" to one of the numbers. This is the only battery switch the camera has.

It is true that turning the aperture out of "a" position is the only off position, but you can also stop the camera from using juice by putting the cap on the lens. Since the sensor is under the cap, it totally turns the meter off in complete darkness, and your camera is always set to grab a quick auto-exposure pic just by popping your cap off.

I also use a lens cap holder (the little string that attaches to lens cap and strap lug) to keep it handy. It is second nature to keep my cap covered when not in use, and I am never looking for that cap. The lens holder is simple and useful being that it is a fixed lens rangefinder.

P.S. My battery is over a year old right now. I go between manual and auto exposure when shooting, but always store it on "a" with the cap on.
