Hi

I wonder if anyone has an idea of the cause of the mark that appears in my images. It's the dark line about an inch above the crane.

When I first noticed it I thought it was a processing error but it turned up again so I cleaned the lens and thought I'd cleaned the filter. Shot some stuff yesterday as part of a test and it's still there. I think its when I use my 35mm Summicron on an MP which looks very clean. I did notice the filter has some smears on it when I checked under a bright light just now. Would that be the cause ?

I shall shoot some more tomorrow with out a filter and double check it dosen't happen with my 50mm. The camera couldn't cause this could it?

Thanks in advance

Ian

It looks a bit like a piece of hair or thread somewhere between the shutter and the film maybe ?

There has to be a huge amount of damage to a filter or lens to show up in a negative, except possibly as overall flare which is not the case here.

Good luck with the diagnosis !

Ian, I'll suggest it's something at the film plane, perhaps a straight hair from a brush sticking out into the image area. I had a similar issue on a new camera that had a string of dried adhesive crossing one corner of the film gate. So you might open the back and carefully examine the film gate and make sure the whole area inside the back is clear of hairs, lint, etc.

Hi MartinP and Doug

Bang on both of you I've just removed a hair after taking the lens off. I thought it odd as I've never seen anything on my negs like that but could not bring myself to think such an expensive object could have a problem.

Still have to retest tomorrow but if that wasn't cause I'd be amazed.

Many thanks for your prompt help. Hopfully I can stop fretting now.

cheers :)
