I am re-covering my father-in-law’s prewar Argus C3 as some of the leather(ette) is missing and the rest is coming off. The glue underneath it is not like other camera leather glue I’ve used. It’s almost rock-hard, black, and none of my usual solvents is softening it. I’ve tried denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, acetone, and probably one or two others. Any suggestions? I think I will need to remove it to get the self-adhesive replacement to stick reliably.

I had a similar problem when recovering a Minolta Autocord, at some time in its life the original covering had been re-attached with something that could not be dissolved. Like you I tried every solvent I could think of. I finally removed the old adhesive with a Dremel and various wire brushes.

Thanks, that’s a good idea. Yeah, it seems I’m going to have to remove it mechanically. I have a Dremel and wire-brush attachments, thanks for the idea!
