I will be in Helsinki for a week. Is the old town worth visiting (is there a old town?) thanks in advance--John

No old town here, really... sorry! Plenty of other stuff to see though: Suomenlinna fortress island (ferry from main marketplace pier, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomenlinna), plenty of churches, if you have time you could venture out to Porvoo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porvoo), which is an old town 50km east of Helsinki.

JalLee,
Funny.
I have just come home from Singapore. And will go to Helsinki later this month. Helsinki is a relatively young city with no 'old city' like Tallinn or Stockholm. But Helsinki is a beautiful city with unique architecture. Unique because much of the architecture is German. While many of the German cities were bombed during WWII, Helsinki is one of the few cities that really can show excellent German art nouveau architecture since Helsinki was spared heavy bombing.
Helsinki has an unique history. Not that unlike Singapore's in many ways. You will find traces of both Russian and Swedish occupation in Helsinki. Like you will find traces of British rule in Singapore. Another thing common is the closeness to the sea.
While the sun goes down around 18.30 in Singapore, you will have sunshine untill 10.00 in Helsinki for the coming three - four months.
