I'm assuming this is an expensive fix, but I'm hoping someone can tell me I'm doing something wrong. About 1 roll in 10, usually somewhere in the middle of a roll of 36, the camera just rewinds.
My opinion on the Hexar RF is it's a brilliant concept not quite perfectly executed. The rangefinder sux next to my old M3, and I reached into the bag once, accidentally squeezed the lens release button, & the lens fell out-into the bag, but that's not good. I bought it, used, in June.
Getting back to The Problem, can I beat it by turning off the camera before I put it back in the bag?
Thanx in advance.

That is not a problem I have heard about before. But you can get them repaired by Konica Japan pretty easily.
Drop me line if you need more info.

This happened to a Hexar RF that I had last year for a few weeks, except it was either exposure 8 or 12 and it happened more often than not.

After some digging I found that it is not an uncommon problem and it has something to do with the contacts in the door. There are some threads floating around the internet about using contact cleaner to fix it.

I ended up returning the it to the seller because I felt I couldn't trust the camera as it did this on the first 5 or 6 rolls I tried.

I hope this helps.

I got mine used, and something similar happened on my very first roll. I thought it had something to do with the battery, so instead of returning it, I changed new batteries and its been working fine so far.

😱😱

If your rangefinder sucks then something is WRONG with your camera. Mine is 10x more contrasty in every single situation I have ever encountered to an M3, I've never tried an M7 but I can't imagine it's better, maybe equal to it can't imagine how it would be better at all. And the viewfinder itself is state-of-the-art in every respect, both clarity and contrast and flare resistance as well. Not to speak about brightness in darkness. Your example must be seriously defective.

As to your latter point about the lens coming off, that's your fault, not the camera. Not like the lens release button has a homing feature to your finger. You are the one who is in control of your finger, not the camera.

About the error in itself, no clue, just wanted to correct you. Good luck.

I wanted to like the Hexar, but the one I had suffered similar winder problems. The finder was ok, but certainly not as clear and contrasty as either of my M3's. (Perhaps the poster above hasn't looked through an M3 with a clean finder?) Anyway, my final take on the Hexar RF was that if it worked well, it could be a great camera, but since Konica orphaned them and service is so spotty, it's best to leave them alone. I know many owners love these cameras- I wanted to be one of those, but in the end I find my old Leicas more reliable.

There are other solutions for all the best features the Hexar RF offers- motorized advance and rewind, fast flash sync, and aperture priority- but no camera provides all these in such a nice compact design; it's a shame it wasn't slightly better implemented and a greater shame they are no longer supported. Oh well.

Hi i loved my former HRF, it´s an awesome M camera, perhaps too heavy and too much electronics.

In regard of your problem, the camera rewinds when it "feels" the roll can´t advance any more, assuming that i think the mech needs lubing, when on the first part of the roll traction may not be a problem, but the second part is heavier and adding the lack of lube may produce the camera to think it must be rewinded.

About the RF i had no problem whatsoever, bright contrasty and flare resistant. It was better than my former m6 but true not better than a fine sample of an m3´s one.

Hope this will give you a clue about your problem.

Bye!
