O'kay,

Please pardon what to many may be a dumb question but; if your ISO 800 film went thru the X-Ray and it was unexposed i.e. a new roll is the film damaged, or is this only in the case of exposed film ? I have a kids party this afternoon and won't be able to get any 800 or higher film in time.

If you are talking about an airport carry-on scanner, not a checked baggage scanner, then I doubt that you'll have a problem. But just reading the words of your post, you don't have much of a choice so...

You're right about my limited choices.... but I am indeed only talking about the scanner for checked baggage not the one behind the "curtain" My thoughts are given my limited choice I won't bother with pics., but if the
x-ray at the ticket line shouldn't hurt it then I'll give it a go....


BTW, How did the leering thing go last night 😉
 
This summer I went to Europe and brought all sorts of 800 and 1600 ISO film with me. All contained in one of those film x-ray bags. It went through 7 carry on x-rays scanners and developed fine when I got to the States.

I didn't see that thread...... instead of the smart ass comment maybe you could tell me what the general opinion was.... is it a problem or not ?
 
If it was the thread on hi-speed film that was about quality and appearance of the different emulsions not whether it was affected by X-ray... so not only was it a smart ass comment but a dumb ass one too......
 
One guy will talk about lead bags, another will talk about hand searches, one will say their film was damaged, and another will say it made no difference.

If you are the type of person who believes airport x-rays damage film then do not carry film through in the first place.

IS0800 at a kid's birthday? That a new twist this time round.
 
OK. That seems definitive. I'll agree with you now - there should be no more queries about film being x-rayed, lead bags, or ISO800 at kiddie birthday parties. Thanks for clearing things up.

Broadly, over the last 20 years, from those who travel regularly, and from the film manufacturers, for carry-on: no problem at all.

For paranoiacs who've never tried it: a problem.

For people who ascribe leaky cameras, rotten labs, etc., to X-rays: a problem.

I have seen perhaps one example of 'X-ray damage' to carry-on film that anyone with knowledge of X-ray damage might confirm -- and even then, I wasn't convinced. This is not to say it never happens: merely that the vast majority of anecdotal evidence on the Web is at best suspect.

Checked baggage is another matter. I've seen paper damaged by X-rays in checked luggage.

Is this because they need to "increase volume" when looking through that large checked bags?

Once I put some exposed film into bag to be checked and it were fine (NPH) after returning home, and one blank roll (Reala 135) which later came out with strange bluish tint not seen before. But I wouldn't give my hand Reala were aged by scanner.
