Hood for 50mm ZM Planar useful?

I have owned and used the $80 +- Zeiss bayonet hood made for this lens as well as the $15+- Heavystar E-Bay hood that screws into the filter ring.

They both serve exactly the same function, Zeiss more elegantly, Chinese knock off much more inexpensively.

I much prefer the Zeiss bayonet-fit hood, because you can remove it, fit a filter, and refit the hood, quicker. I'm a GREAT believer in hoods for lens protection as well as for reducing flare/increasing contrast.

i've used my VC hood (for a 35 or 40 mm nokton), and it fits just fine. nothing to compare to, though.

The ZM lenses are some of the most flare proof I have ever used. Never needed a hood for that purpose.

You may well be right -- unless, of course, there's any dust on the glass. But I like 'em for mechanical protection (including keeping dust/rain off the glass...).

Cheers,

R.
