Anyone use a hood on this lens? The front element is pretty far inside the lens body. Was there a hood and if so what did it look like if anyone has it.

Because of the recess, I've never felt the lens needed a hood. However, I have used a 43-52mm filter adapter on the lens, which is about as much of a hood as you might could get away with on this lens. Whatever hood was available originally is probably mostly unobtanium.

Thank you for the link. Just for the record, the Yama hood does cut into the image some. Cropping out the vignetting you are at about 35mm. No more hood for me with this lens. And as was reported in a test this lens is really sharp.

I use a very nice Chinese 43mm vented-tilted CNC-machined lens hood designed for wide-angle lenses and which is a copy of the Leitz 12504 hood. NB : it is wider and shorter than the current vented-tilted replicas of the Leitz 12585 hood.

It's a perfect fit for the W-Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 in S-mount.

Yes the front element of this lens is recessed enough but the hood will be useful for two important things :

- it will protect the lens from dings and will allow you to travel without any valuable and original NKT front lens cap (you can put a generic 62mm clip-on lens cap on the hood itself if you wish),
- the hood will save many pics of yours as it will not allow your fingers to be in the frame, which happens very often when you use this lens without any hood and grab it with your left hand to focus and hold the camera unit.

I bought this excellent hood for a few bucks on the 'bay.

Example : item 153527185444 (no connection to the seller).

You can also use the rear part of the two-parts 43mm original alloy Nikon hood designed for the Nikkor-S-C 50mm f/1.4, if you are lucky enough to have one.

The NKT hood on display on the mir website also uses this rear part from the old alloy 43mm Nikon hood, with an original add-on for the 28mm lens.

Does anyone know of a workable hood for this lens in LTM? I have one and it's a wonderful lens but it has an obscure filter size of 34.5mm. There is someone on e bay selling 34.5mm push on adapters to larger filter sizes and I'm wondering if that might work. Joe

I think you need to search e bay for "Leica parts" to find the push on filter adapter and search "34.5" for a one piece adapter from a Russian supplier. I think the El Nikkor enlarging lens's were 34.5mm. Years ago I found a 34.5mm series adapter that lets me put a hood and filter on my Nikkor 3.5cm f2.5 LTM lens but that setup vignettes on the 2.8cm Nikkor. Joe

I think it's the Leica SOOTF adapter that works fine as a hood. And you can use the Summitar filters or another Summitar>E36 adapter to use E36 filters. I used one of these with the Nikkor 35mm LTM but I don't think I tried it with the 28 when I had it. I still have there adapters.

The Chinese hood for the 28 S mount looks very close to thickness as the Yama. Too bad the Yama didn't work out. Nice hood.

Nope.

Left, the regular tilted-vented hood - which is 100% similar to the Yama hood - on the W-Nikkor-C 35mm f/2.5. Right, the tilted-vented hood designed for wide-angle lenses on the W-Nikkor-C 28mm f/3.5.

The latter is 10mm shorter and 10mm wider.
