I just bought a 28mm Hexanon and need a suggestion where to find a hood. I always use hoods since I don't use filters or seldom use front lens caps.
It certainly need not be "official Hexanon", just functional. Price is a factor since I'd rather spend my money on going places to photograph, film and glass.
I see there are a number of people selling Chinese "46mm hoods for Leica" on E-Bay for $9-$15. I suspect these are for 50mm or 35mm lenses. Anyone know if they vignette on a 28mm?
thanks,

Bob, I use an old Contax GG-1 metal hood which was designed for the Contax 28mm lens. Fits my 28mm Hexanon perfectly, no vignetting, and I think I paid $9 for a used dented one at KEH. I think I almost paid more in postage having them send it to me. You can also find some used ones on fleabay.
Best Wishes!

heavystar 46W from eBay, $9 with cap, $6 sans cap. Shot of mine below. You will love the lens!

I tried the 46 mm Heavystar (already had one for another lens) and it vignetted terribly with my 28 Elmarit.

On a serious note, congrats on a new (to you) lens, and keep us posted how it works out for you. As for the hood, I have no experience with heavystar's hoods for 28mm, but I bought other accessories from him twice. Very fast delivery (to Germany), recommended. (The only thing I could not recommend, from my one-time-personal-experience, is his 28-90 screwmount-to-M adapter. That did not work out of the box.) But for shades, hoods etc.: thumbs up!

Holler when you find one that works. I have a Heavystar hood on my Nikkor 50mm lens. Well made. I would like to get a pair of cheap hoods (28mm & 35mm) so I can put the originals back in their box.
I wonder whats up with one person touting the Heavystar 46W and another person saying that a Heavystar hood didn't work? Different hoods?

The original vented one has a front dia. of ~62mm, at a distance of ~ 17mm, it goes wider, then closes in to 62mm, so looks more like the non-heavystar vendor ones (cam.plus?) 46mm ones.
If that 46mm (W) one that Peter N has doesn't vignette or block the VF, it should be fine.

There are 3 types of 3rd party hoods I have used/seen
1. solid,non-vented
2. vented with straight edge
3. vented with bended edge
2 and 3 work the best. I have 3 in almost all filter sizes in the 39 - 62 range.

It seems I solved my need for a hood by stopping by our local used camera equipment emporium where I found a choice to 2 different 46mm short round metal hoods. It seems they don't vignette or block much of the finder. And the owner never charges me for small things like that since I give him all the small odd things that I have no use for.
Well, I have no current plans to dispose of the CV 28 f3.5. I just had to opportunity to buy the almost new Hexanon at a price that was too good to pass up.Hear, hear, one of the staunchest advocates of the VC 28 f3.5 bought a Hexanon 28mmA changing of the guard!

Snorting silver salts
I sold mine last week here. I loved it but shoot 28mm so scarcely I could not afford to keep it on stand by all that time.
The original hood rotates on the thread part, so you never have a non-vented part in front of the viewfinder, very clever. I reckon the Heavystar hood should be fine, unless you stop down past f5.6. Which really is unnecessary, since the lens is really sharp at wider apertures. YMMV!

Anybody owning one of these lenses and a28 Summicron?? Will the hood from the Summicron fit the Hex? I've always wondered since they both have 46mm threads.

Bumping this with the same question...
I wander...
I just shot the hex with the same filter than Peter, and the same hood, and no doubt it vignets.
I have the feeling that the problem might be with the first cylindrical part of the hood. I have taken the Heavystar vented hood to a turn and shortened it quite a lot, but still get vignetting.
Does someone have good results with this one?:

I believe the cron has a hood that clips on the body and I don't see how it could fit the hex.Anybody owning one of these lenses and a28 Summicron?? Will the hood from the Summicron fit the Hex? I've always wondered since they both have 46mm threads.

Thanks for the link, Roland.
It seems to be a good solution indeed but 140$ before shipping from Japan is a bit steep.
That being said, I just had a close look at both the vented and the "wide" version. The wide has a much shorter cylindrical sleeve than the vented one.
By eyeballing the geometry of both on the 28, my guess is that I could try to shorten the wide version by a few millimeters, maybe by the thickness of a filter.
I wonder if someone is successfully using the wide heavystar on the Hex 28 without a filter ...

I'd give it a try
I'd give it a try
At that price. I have that vendors 40.5 version of the bent vented hood for a collapsible cron and that is what I would first try if none of the heavystars worked.
Another option is a step-up ring from 46-49, again trying the 3rd party hoods, or even a 46-52 and Nikon HN3 hood, though I'd be surprised if you had to go all the way to 52 to avoid vignetting.
If you need addl. measurements or photos of the original, let me know.

I bought the 46mm Heavystar SW for my 28 Hex and it vignettes badly, albeit with a filter attached. Shame really because for the price, they are great value (I use them without problems on my 35 and 50's.) So I just went back to using the vented hood that came with the lens.

Hmmm., I too use a George Bush Jr
hood from HeavyStar on my Hex 28 (which I plan to list for sale one of these days) and it doesnt seem to cause any problems.:

Krosya, should I assume that you don't use any filter on the lens?
That would confirm that shortening the wide version of the Heavystar hood could be the solution.
I just need to find a lathe now...

Both. All my photos from Turkey/Romania (I posted a while back a thread or two on that) are from Hexar RF/Leica M5 - Hex was mostly used on Hexar RF due to it's frame lines. Actually I hardly use 28mm on RD1s. Dont know why, but I seem to use 35 and 50 on digital more.
Here is one thread where I used Hex 28 on film (Hexar RF):
