Just received a Domke F5-XB and although I like the size, the zipper seems like it's going to really annoying. I tend to like bags with just a flap and I though I could just leave the zipper open and ignore it but the extra material that overhangs the opening allowing the zipper threads to meet basically makes the opening smaller and you can't really avoid hitting the camera on the zipper each time you get it in and out.

Just wondering long term if you get over this or if I should just return it. I much prefer the Domke F3 flap and clip type of bag but the size is tremendous for just a single body and extra lens, some film etc. I wouldn't mind it actually if it wasn't so wide.

It's kind of annoying. I tend not to be in and out of the bag as much as others -- with the RF cameras usually the camera is on my shoulder and the bag is just for extra lenses and film I might need.

If it's annoying you now, it will probably keep annoying you. It is probably not the bag to use if keeping the body in a pristine condition is of prime importance. That said, I have used mine steadily over the years when even the 803 satchel would seem to noticeable. I have used it with my Mamiya 7 when not carrying an extra lens, and use it these days with my R-D1. For a long time, I found the velcro sound more annoying than the zippler, but the velcro has pretty much worn down. I need to order another one soon, and I will. I like it better than the similarly sized Crumpler.

One thing no one mentions, so maybe it's not a problem. A few years back, my cousin's two-year old separated the strap from the bag in one quick move. I've given some thought to having it permanently attached for security reasons, but will probably wait till I get a replacement. The strap is meant to be detachable so you can use the bag as a belt pack, but I tried it once and didn't like it.

the bag works fine for me.
my gear has never been scratched by the plastic zipper. i can carry 2 bodies with lenses attached and switch back and forth w/o concern.
i put some duct tape on half the velcro and decreased the noise and effort needed to open the flap. i keep the zipper open most of the time except for when putting it all to bed.
great bag, great size.

Thanks for the replies. Decided it probably wasn't for me. Going back to my Jack ***** bag with a Domke insert for now. Not ideal but quick in and out and room for a folded newspaper and not much bigger.

Zippers annoy you?

I have two of these bags and the only thing I wish to change is the noise the velcro makes. Otherwise, they're perfect light bags, ideal for day walks.
